Newman (Kneut) was born October 21, 1928, to Dutch immigrants Titus (Tony) and Hendrika de Haas. He grew up in the Dutch community of Orange City, Iowa. He was the youngest of six children.

Newman graduated from Northwestern Junior College, and Iowa State University. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, earning a Bachelor's degree in Physics from ISU and a Master’s Degree in Physics from the University of Maryland.

Newman worked as a Physicist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland, retiring in 1990 after more than 39 years of service.

Newman met the love of his life – Betty Foreman – in Orange City. The couple got married in 1951 and spent the next 63 years together - raising their children - opening their home to local and out of town guests - and traveling across the country to visit with family and friends.

Newman is survived by two sons, Dan (Carolyn) and Dave (Tina). He is also survived by four grandkids and eight great grandchildren.

Betty went home on February 15, 2015.

Newman was an active member of Knox Orthodox Presbyterian Church - serving on their Session for fifty years. He was also active, for thirty years, with the OPC’s Foreign Missions Committee. He and Betty were active with many activities at Knox, from social functions to improvements to the facility and grounds. Newman was also on the board to start a Christian School in the Silver Spring area. The Washington Christian Academy was the product of that board’s hard work. Newman loved the outdoors. This included watching wildlife in their backyard, birdwatching, camping, backpacking, and sharing this love with others. They also enjoyed watching their grand and great grandkids play sports.
