Alfred Korthals age 94, of George, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at his home in George.

Visitation will be Monday, April 3, 2023, from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church at George, IA with Rev. Ellen Campbell Gardner, officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery at George, IA.

Alfred Korthals was born June 7, 1928, on the family farm south of George, IA, the son of Gerrit and Ida (DeWeerd) Korthals. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school. As a young man he started farming. He was united in marriage to Melba Schmidt on January 19, 1949, at the Boyden Presbyterian Parsonage. They made their home on the Schmidt family farm four miles south of George. To this union three children were born, Margery, Patricia and Gary. Melba passed away in 1968. Alfred was united in marriage to Carolyn L. Jamieson on August 1, 1970 at the United Methodist Church in Danville, VT. The couple made their home on a farm south of George from 1970 until moving into town in 1990. Alfred was a longtime member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church where he served the church as an Elder, Deacon and taught Sunday School. He was active in the George Wheelchair ministry. He enjoyed camping, fishing, bowling and spending time with his family. Over the years he collected a few antique Case tractors, he often would ride them through the George Celebration Day Parade with pride. Along with the love of the Lord, farming was a deep root in his soul. Even in his later years, he wouldn’t miss being involved in planting and harvesting, riding in the tractor or combine was always a highlight of the year. This past Wednesday morning, Alfred died peacefully at his home at the age of ninety-four. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his children, Margery Nieuwendorp of Sheldon, IA; Patricia (Harold) Berge of Seatle, WA; and Gary (Lori) Korthals of George, IA; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great-great grandson with another great-great grandchild on the way; sister-in-law, Floy Korthals of George, IA along with many beloved nieces, nephews and other extended family.

Alfred was preceded in death by two wives, Melba and Carolyn; parents, Gerrit and Ida Korthals; son-in-law, William “Zeke” Nieuwendorp; twin grandsons, Lance and Lonnie Korthals; his siblings, Henrietta, Jeanette, Gertrude (infant), John, Marion, Edward, Harold, Leonard (infant), Leona, Albert, Edith and Ronald.
