Lane Kooi age 91 of Sioux Center, Iowa died Monday, April 3, 2023 at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, April 8, 2023 at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church in Lebanon with Reverend Kurt Monroe, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery in Lebanon.

Visitation will be Friday, April 7th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM with family present from at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Memorial donations are preferred to Hope Haven.

Leendert “Lane” Kooi was born January 11, 1932, to George Sr. and Greta (Vos) Kooi near Lebanon. He grew up on a farm near Lebanon with his five siblings and attended Garfield Township Country School.

Lane enlisted into the United States Army and served overseas in the Korean War for one year. He was honorably discharged in 1955.

On January 17, 1953, Lane was united in marriage to Margaret Jansen in Brooten, Minnesota. They began their married life on a farm near Hudson, South Dakota and later farmed near Lebanon, Iowa. In 1989 they moved to Sioux Center. After their retirement, they spent their winter months in Florida where they made many friends. Margaret passed away after a battle with cancer on February 4, 2008.

Lane was united in marriage to Joan Ognibene on November 30, 2010, in Florida. They wintered there for a few years before moving back to Sioux Center full time. After nearly 10 years of marriage, Joan passed away on July 15, 2020.

Lane was a member at Lebanon Christian Reformed Church where he served as both elder and deacon. After moving to Sioux Center after retiring from farming, he became a member at Sioux Center First Christian Reformed Church where he also served as elder. He was also a board member of Hope Haven and a member of the VFW. He was a farmer his entire life and truly enjoyed farming. He retired from farming, but the farming never left him. He worked at Green World and worked at Ground Effects for many years. He enjoyed tractors, visiting, walking, gardening, and had beautiful flower gardens after his retirement. He had a strong faith in his Savior and was always willing to share it. He enjoyed spending time visiting with his family and was always willing to meet and greet others.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Marjorie Oolman of Orange City, IA, Lois (Larry) Keizer of Watertown, SD, Barb (Lyle) Wielenga of Avon, SD; son-in-law, Richard Sheraden of Sebring, FL, stepson Gary Ognibene of Magnolia, TX; 17 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren with 1 on the way; siblings, George (Lari) Kooi of Sioux Falls, SD, Alida (Marvin) Scholten of Maurice, IA, Jean (Teunis) Fluit of Larchwood, IA, Linda (Kenny) Altena of Sioux Center, IA; brother-in-law, Ben (Lou) Jansen of Brainerd, MN; along with nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George Sr. and Greta; wife, Margaret; second wife, Joan; infant son, Lane; daughter, Suzanne Sheraden; sister, Grada (John) Van Ballegooyen; son-in-law Douglas Oolman; and great granddaughter, Gabby Keizer.
