Mrs. Mary Hoogland, age 70, of Maurice, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022, at Crown Pointe Estates in Sioux Center.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, December 30, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. A prayer service will take place on Saturday, December 31, at 10:00am, at the church, followed by interment at the Sherman Township Cemetery near Maurice. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, at 11:30am, at the church with the Rev. John Lee officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane was born on January 20, 1952, in Colton, South Dakota, one of seven children born to Melvin and Ailene (Brower) Burgers. As the middle child she had the best of both worlds, younger siblings to tease and older siblings to tag along with. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls, before enrolling at Dordt College in Sioux Center, where she met her future husband, James Allen Hoogland, a young dairy farmer from Maurice.

Mary and “Jim” were united in marriage on August 10, 1973, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Falls. Together they made their home on a dairy farm near Maurice and were blessed with five daughters and a son. In addition to being a wife and mother, Mary played an important part in the operation of Hoogland Dairy. Jim passed away suddenly on May 8, 2010, in Orange City, after almost 37 years of marriage. Following Jim’s passing, Mary moved to a home in Maurice, until earlier this year when health issues made it necessary for her to move to Sioux Center.

Mrs. Hoogland was a member of the Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, where she worshipped weekly with her family and friends, celebrated life’s joys and sorrows, and served as His hands and feet. Mary’s door was always open, and her gift of hospitality was evident through the countless meals she prepared for her family and friends, her children’s friends, and workers at the dairy. She also offered a ‘home away from home’ to numerous college students and exhibited tremendous patience and empathy towards those in need of a friend. “The more the merrier” was Mary’s way, and her love for people and desire to include everyone was a blessing to many.

Mary’s greatest joy in life was her family, not only her children and grandchildren, but her siblings and extended family as well. She looked forward to the time they spent together, whether it was Sunday afternoon lunch and coffee at Minerva’s, going out to eat at Lally’s in Le Mars, or spending the day shopping with her sisters.

Those thankful for having shared her life include seven children; Jennifer, and her husband, Curt Vlietstra, of Waupun, Wisconsin; Martha, and her husband, Ron Hulshof, Jr., of Ireton; Maranda, and her husband, Vasya Heytsi, of Tyachevo, Ukraine; Janna, and her husband, Brian Aukes, of Beaver Creek, Minnesota; Sveta Schubert, of Orange City; Jordan Hoogland, and his wife, Julie, of Maurice; and Marlena, and her husband, Nick Fanning, of Hudson, South Dakota; 28 grandchildren, Jakob (fiancé Ainsley Moore), Cade, and Bryce Vlietstra; Ethan, Tyrell, Cassidy, Wyatt, Cheyenne, and Jesse Hulshof; Nataniel, Mihae, Victor, Valeria, Yura, and Anastasia Heytsi; Jaren and Braden Aukes; Kyle Schubert; Brooklyn, Sydney, Rylee, Gracelyn, and Taylor Hoogland; and Morgan and Ryker De Jong, and Nathan, Sage, and Maverick Fanning; two very special friends, Dean Hibma and Minerva Small, both of Maurice; three sisters, Kathy Burgers, Sue Nelsen, and Beth, and her husband, Greg Olsen, all of Sioux Falls; three brothers and their spouses, Paul and Pam Burgers, of Madison, South Dakota; Dave and Connie Burgers, of Bennington, Nebraska; and Tim and Michael Bacon-Burgers, of Boston, Massachusetts. She is also survived by her husband’s family, including his three siblings and their spouses, Marv and Judy Hoogland, of Maurice; Glenda and Jan Altena, of Orange City; and Peter Jr. and Kim Hoogland, of Sioux Center; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by Jim’s parents, Peter and Gwen Hoogland; a granddaughter, Kendra Grace Hulshof; a brother-in-law, Fred Nelsen; and a special family friend, Ken Small.

Memorials will be used to support The Rev. Vasya and Maranda Heytsi’s work in Ukraine.
