Ardell “Ardie” Thelma was born on October 8, 1930, to Theodore and Agnes (Moe) Pederson at the family farm near Finley, North Dakota. She was raised on the farm and went to country school until her family moved to Portland, North Dakota. Ardie graduated from Portland High School in 1948. She attended one quarter of college at Mayville State College in Mayville, North Dakota, at which point she was offered a bookkeeping job at a local business that she accepted. In 1949, she was hired by the local bank and served for six years as a teller and then a cashier.

During this time a new teacher came to Portland. Even though this new teacher lived in an apartment across the alley from her family, it wasn’t until a church supper that she had the opportunity to first visit with Glen Hegstad. Soon Ardie and Glen were dating and married on July 24, 1955, at Aurdal Lutheran Church in Portland. Ardie had the opportunity of advancing her career at the bank but turned it down to take care of their growing family.

Glen’s teaching career took them to Hillsboro, North Dakota and then to Orange City, Iowa. Ardie was a tremendous support to Glen throughout his teaching career, typing many tests for him along with the early versions of Glen’s dissertation for his PhD. In retirement, she typed hundreds of pages of Glen’s family history books. As their kids grew older, Ardie began working at Ramaker Library of Northwestern College. She enjoyed working with the staff and students of the library for nineteen years before retiring in 1992.

In retirement Glen and Ardie enjoyed being involved with their kids and grandchildren in addition to regular visits to relatives in North Dakota. They visited Norway and met relatives from both sides of the family. For several winters they enjoyed bus trips to the south, in addition to a number of winters at Lake Havasu, Arizona and one in southern California. Glen passed away on April 9, 2019, in Orange City, after more than 63 years of marriage.

Throughout the years Ardie was involved with ladies’ Bible studies, Sunday School, and was active in various ministries of Trinity Reformed Church. During their years of retirement Ardie and Glen participated in several mission work projects. She was also active with the Dutch Heritage Boosters.

Ardie enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and quilting. She loved to bake cakes, cookies, bread, and buns. Ardie was an avid reader and in retirement reading a book in one day was a common occurrence. She was a good friend to many, and Glen often described her as an encourager to many women.

Ardell is survived by her three children, Christine, and her husband, Jerry Dykstra, of Orange City; Gary Hegstad, and his wife, Julie, of Lennox, South Dakota; and Renee, and her husband, Jeff Guthmiller, of Orange City; ten grandchildren, John (Kim) Dykstra, Michael (Lynnae) Dykstra, Nathan (Danielle) Dykstra, Joshua (Mindy) Dykstra, Bethany (Tim ) Swart, Grant (Jen) Hegstad, Emily (Nate) Fischer, Greg (Carly) Hegstad, Sean (Abby) Guthmiller, and Jennifer (Derek) Plegge; twenty-three great-grandchildren (plus one more soon to arrive); her sister, Norma Hogfoss, of Portland; her brother and his wife, Ted and Arlene Pederson, of Cheyenne, Wyoming; and many nephews and nieces.

Ardell was preceded in death by her husband Glen; her sister and her husband, Eleanor and Purdin Dahl; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Hogfoss; a brother-in-law and his wife, Philip and Ethel Hegstad; and three sisters-in-law and their husbands, Gladys and Stephen Jastrzebski, Rebecca and Toivo Maki, and Lettie and Bill Greenfield.

“Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all’….a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:28-30
