Mrs. Jan Vander Zwaag, age 80, of Orange City, passed away on Monday, November 14, 2022, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, November 18, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, November 19, at 10:00am, at the church with the Rev. Dr. Brian Keepers and Mr. David Harmelink officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Janice Mae was born on December 17, 1941, near Newkirk, the daughter of John C. and Walsie (Van Rooyen) Blom. She was raised on a farm near Newkirk and graduated from the Newkirk High School.

On June 14, 1961, she was united in marriage to Gerald Vander Zwaag in Newkirk, where they made their home and were members of the Newkirk Reformed Church. In 1996, they moved to Orange City, where they were members of Trinity Reformed Church. In May of 2016, they became residents of the Christian Retirement Home, and later of Fieldcrest Assisted Living, both in Sheldon. Gerald passed away on December 22, 2016, in Sheldon, after more than 55 years of marriage. In December of 2021, Jan transferred to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Jan worked for several county offices for Sioux County, retiring as the deputy county auditor. She enjoyed participating in Girls League and Christian Endeavor, as well as playing cards with friends and family, traveling, spending winters in Mesa, Arizona, and collecting lion figurines and bird houses.

Survivors include three daughters, Sherry, and her husband, Mike McNamara, of Greeley, Colorado; Sandy, and her husband, Gary Van Wettering, of Spencer; and Shelly Norlen, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; seven grandchildren, Kayla, and her husband, Sal Raya; Zach Van Wettering, and his wife, Laura; Taylor, and her husband, Nate Thurlow; Sydney Van Wettering; Casey Van Wettering; Caitlin Norlen, and her boyfriend, Darren Allen; and Collin Norlen; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and their husbands, Ruth and Daryl Vaas, of Greeley; Wanda and Brian Dittman, of Omaha, Nebraska; John and Deb Blom, of Arnolds Park; and Craig and Sherie Blom, of Newkirk.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Vander Zwaag; and a son-in-law, John Norlen.

Memorials will be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
