HERMAN PLATHE WAS PIONEER AT GRANVILLE
Reached Nearly 92 Years—Burial Saturday

Funeral services were held Saturday for Herman Plathe, nearly 92, pioneer resident of the Granville vicinity. Mr. Plathe passed on Thursday noon after an illness of six weeks, at the age of 91 years and 10 months.

He was born Jan. 21, 1850, at New Vienna, Iowa. On Oct. 24, 1876, he married Anna Niggeling and following their marriage the couple settled on a farm south of Granville. In March, 1895, they retired and moved to Granville where they built a fine, modern home.

Mr. Plathe is survived by his wife and six children – four daughters and two sons, who are Mrs. Nick Konz (Mary), Mrs. John Konz (Celia), Bernard J. Plathe, Granville; A. J. Plathe, Bellingham, Minn.; Mrs. Jas. Henrich (Elizabeth), Mrs. Peter Henrich (Katherine), Madison, Minn. Two daughters died in infancy. Grandchildren number forty-seven and great grandchildren forty-one.

On October 24th of this year the couple observed the 65th anniversary of their marriage. Although then in failing health Mr. Plathe was able to enjoy the happy event, surrounded by his children and grandchildren.

Rev. Henry Shaiphoff of Garnaville, a nephew of Mrs. Plathe, was in charge of the services at St. Joseph’s church and six grandsons were pallbearers, namely Lawrence Konz, Peter Konz, Ferd Plathe, Melvin Plathe, Arnold Plathe, Cletus Henrich.

Plathe and son Arthur, Bode; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Meitz, Mrs. Katie Thilges, West Bend; Sister M. Kathleen, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Halten, son Jack, Oyens; Mrs. Mary Niggeling, son John, Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Wolf and children, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Kriege and son, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Konz, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Galles, Julius Galles, John Galles, and Elmer Klein, Ferd Plathe and families, Mrs. Fred Rolling, Remsen; Pvt. Jos. Plathe, Co. K, National Guard, New Orleans; Hilary Konz and family, Le Mars; Bernard Minten and family, Messrs. and Mesdames J. Schneider, John Engeldinger, Geo. RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (informant Ben J. Plathe) has Herman Engelbert Plathe; resident of Granville for 20 years; a retired farmer; wife Anna Niggeling; born January 31, 1850 in New Vienna, Dubuque County, Iowa; parents Joseph Plathe and Elizabeth Wilminghof, both born in Germany; died at 11:45 a.m. December 18, 1941; cause, generalized arteriosclerosis, duration 5 years; buried in the Granville Cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page shows him buried in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Granville. Parents Bernard Herman Joseph Plathe (1819-1904) and Elizabeth Wininghoff Plathe (1819-1910). Four siblings listed. Spouse Anna Mary Niggeling Plathe (1860-1944, married 1876). Eight children listed. There is a photo of the joint headstone of Herman and Anna, and a photo of them as an older couple.

The 1925 Iowa state census also gives his mother’s name as Elizabeth Wininghoff.
