Mrs. Darla Vande Weerd, age 69, of Alton, Iowa, and Bruce, South Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at her residence in Bruce.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, August 29, at 3:00pm, at the Hospers Community Center with the Rev. Gregg Te Beest officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hospers Cemetery near Hospers. A meal and time of visitation with the family will be held at the community center, following the interment. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Darla Faye was born on April 14, 1953, in Orange City, the second of three daughters born to Harvey “Butch” and Nellie Marie De Bruin. She grew up in Hospers where she attended the Hospers Christian School before graduating from the Western Christian High School in Hull. She then earned her associates degree in nursing from the Northwest Iowa Vocational School in Sheldon.

On June 3, 1971, she was united in marriage to John A. Vande Weerd. They made their home and raised their family on a farm south of Hospers, as well as on a farm near Bruce, South Dakota. In addition to helping John on the farm and being the “best grain cart driver in the world”, she worked as a nurse for thirteen years at the Sioux Valley Hospital and the Sioux Falls Children’s Hospital, both in Sioux Falls.

Darla enjoyed going fishing, watching her family at the races, doing various crafts, and bird watching. She especially loved being a grandmother and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of more than 51 years, John, of Alton and Bruce; four children and their spouses, Gina and Jason Vacura, of Le Mars; Stacie and Mark Klosterman, of Anna, Ohio; Harvey and Leah Vande Weerd, of Alton; and Steve and Jane Vande Weerd, of Lead Hill, Arkansas; eleven grandchildren, Sam, Anna, Daniel, and Sarah Vacura; Sydney, Tayler and Brooke Klosterman; Cameron Vande Weerd, and his wife, Emily; Connor Vande Weerd; Hope, and her husband, Johnathon Crowhurst; and Austin Verdoorn, and his wife, Chelsea; six great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Lonnie and Lyle Gorter, of Escondido, California.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Carol and Larry Fliear.

Memorials may be given to the Brookings Health System Hospice in Brookings, South Dakota.
