From the Alton Democrat, November 21, 1941:

C. W. Hentges received a telegram Monday announcing the death of his brother, John Hentges, of Chewellah, Wash. Mr. Hentges was long a resident of the Alton and Hospers community moving west some thirty years ago. He was sixty-nine years of age and is survived by his wife and five children.

From the Spokesman-Review (Spokane, Washington), November 18, 1941:

JOHN HENTGES, INLAND EMPIRE PIONEER, DEAD

CHEWELAH, Wash., Nov. 17.—John Hentges, 69, a resident of Stevens county since 1921, died at his home today following a long illness. Before coming to Chewelah in 1934, he had lived near Cheney and Uniontown, Wash., arriving at the latter in 1909 from Iowa.

Mr. Hentges’ farm home, “The Lost Valley Ranch,” three miles east of town at the base of Quartzite mountain, is one of the show places of the Colville valley.

Mr. Hentges is survived by his widow and five children, all living in Chewelah, Mike, Katherine, Ted, Nick and Mrs. Lou Putoff; 12 grandchildren, a brother and sister in Iowa, and a sister in Minnesota.

His FindaGrave.com page has John Joseph Hentges, born 11 Oct 1872 in Bissen, Canton de Mersch, Luxembourg; died 17 Nov 1941 in Chewelah, Stevens County, Washington; buried in Holy Cross Cemetery, Spokane, Washington. Parents Theodore Hentges (1837-1921) and Anna Margaritha Kremer Hentges (1839-1905). Seven siblings listed. Spouse Anna Catherine Jungers Hentges (1870-1947, married 1900). Children: Michael Theodore Hentges (1901-1965), Catherine Margaret Hentges (1903-1986), Theodore William Hentges (1905-1984), Nicholas William Hentges (1908-1997), Margaret Ann Hentges Puthoff (1910-1997). There is a photo of his headstone (which just calls him John Hentges).

The 1900 U.S. census (recorded June 20, 1900) shows John Hentges, age 27, born Oct. 1873, single, living alone and farming in Carroll Township, O’Brien County, Iowa; born in Luxemburg, immigrated in 1879, naturalized.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1900 has groom John Hentges, age 27, resident of Hospers, a farmer, born in Luxemburg, Germany, parents Theodore Hentges and Anna Kramer; bride Anna Jungers, age 28, resident of Hospers, born in Wisconsin, parents Michael Jungers and Margaret Rotmelle[?]; married at Hospers June 19, 1900.

He appears periodically in news notes and advertisements (for livestock) in Sioux County newspapers in the 1890s and 1900s. By 1910 the family is living in Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington, where his occupation is given as laborer. In 1920 the family owns a farm in Tyler Township, Spokane County, Washington. In 1930 they own a farm in Chewelah, Stevens County, Washington. In 1940 John and Anne are still on the farm with their daughter Katherine M. Hentges (37, single) and grandson James J. Hentges (7).

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) has John Hentges, age 44, born October 18, 1873, a citizen by his father's naturalization, resident of Tyler, Washington, farming, wife Anna K. Hentges; medium height and build, grey-blue eyes, dark brown hair.
