Husband of Former Alton Girl Passes

Robert D. Newton, husband of the former Josephine Cambier of Alton passed on at a Los Angeles hospital Sunday morning Nov. 15th, according to a telephone message from Mrs. Newton’s sister, Mrs. Dildine, to her brother, Will Cambier of Orange City, and her parents here, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Cambier.

Will Cambier left Monday for Los Angeles to be with his sister and attend the funeral services to be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at Forest Lawn cemetery. Mr. Newton’s parents arrived recently from Maine to be at their son’s bedside.

Robert Newton was 45 years of age and a veteran of the World war. He has been in ill health for several years. He married Miss Cambier twelve years ago on April 20th, 1929, in Los Angeles. Several years ago he was a guest here at the Cambier home with Mrs. Newton while on a motor trip to Maine to visit his parents. Alton friends extend sincere sympathy.

The California Death Index has Robert Denning Newton, born 11 Jan 1898 in Maine, died 16 Nov 1941 in Los Angeles, mother’s maiden name Denning.

His FiindaGrave.com page adds his burial place: Sanct. of Fidelity, Gardenia Terrace, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California. Parents John Orville Newton (1864-1958) and Addie Denning Newton (1867-1903). Spouse Josephine M. Cambier Newton (1893-1971). There is a photo of his and Josephine’s joint crypt plaque.

The 1940 U.S. census shows Robert D. (41) and Josephine M. (43) living in Palm Springs, California; no employment information is given for either of them. In 1935 they had lived in Los Angeles. In 1930 they were living in Los Angeles, where he was an accountant for a steel company and she was a public service social worker.
