Donald Vincent Gergen, age 74 of Granville, IA passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at Sanford USD Medical Center & Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 28, 2022 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, IA, with Father Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Granville. Graveside military honors will be conducted by the Granville Veterans and American Legion Russell West Post of Paullina. Visitation with family present will be Sunday from 4-7 p.m. with parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church. Visitation will resume 1 hour prior to the funeral on Monday at the church.

Don was born on Aug. 8, 1947 to Nick and Bernadette (Nilles) Gergen in Remsen, IA. He was raised in Granville and attended St Joseph Catholic School, graduating in 1965. From there he entered the US Navy where he served until 1968. In 1968 he worked for Interstate Bridge Work in Council Bluffs, IA.

On Oct. 3, 1970 he married Carolyn Budden at St Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. Don went back to school at the Northwest Iowa Technical College in Sheldon, IA for auto mechanics and graduated in 1970. They moved to LeMars where he became Service Manager of the LeMars Goodyear store. In 1972 they moved back to Granville where they began farming and Don was also employed at Packerland in Hospers, IA.

Don was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and American Legion in Paullina. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, golfing, going to his grandkids activities, socializing, driving his gator and his red truck. Don loved his farm and his John Deere’s. His passion was his farm. He loved to talk to anyone even if it was a stranger. He loved his family and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He loved attending anything that involved his family. His faith was incredible, he loved God.

Don is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Granville; his daughter, Stacy (Jim) Wynia of Granville, IA; his son, Darin (Mary) Gergen of Sioux Falls, SD; 5 grandchildren, Makayla Johnson & her friend Zach, Madison Johnson, Quinten Wynia & his friend Annessa, Nick Gergen and Emmy Gergen; his 3 sisters, Kay (Ed) Harms of Kansas, Janet Strouth of Orange City, IA, Bonnie (Dale) Wigg of New Elm, TX; In-laws, Roberta Gergen of Kansas City, KS, Ronnie (Byrlea) Budden of Granville, IA, Donnie (Maretta) Budden of Granville, IA, Beverly (Dan) Reinholdt of Cherokee, IA, Lori (Bruce) Fedders of Sioux Center, IA; numerous nieces & nephews & tons of friends.

Preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dale Gergen, his father & mother-in-law, Norbert & Eva Budden, 2 brothers-in-law, Tony Pottebaum Jr. and Marvin Strouth.

Casket bearers will be Dan Horkey, Virgil Frederes, Tom Budden, Quinten Wynia, Nick Gergen, Zachary Maurer, Emmet Steffes, Jake Klein & Duane Penning.
