From the Sioux County Capital, October 16, 1941:

JOHN VISSER DIES

John Visser, 85 year old resident of Orange City, died Wednesday afternoon of complications due to advanced age. He had been living at the Wm. Kalsbeek home.

Surviving are his wife, one brother, Klaas Visser of Clara City, Minn. and five children, Art Visser of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Jennie, Mrs. Jake Harms of Clara City; Anna, Mrs. Wm. Duitsman of Clara City; Dora, Mrs. Wm. Kalsbeek of Orange City; and Reka, Mrs. Dick Muilenburg of Orange City.

Tentative arrangements for the funeral have been made for Friday at 1:30 at the Wm. Kalsbeek home and at the First Ref. church with Rev. Colenbrander in charge.

JOHN VISSER DIES AT ORANGE CITY

John Visser, 85, died at his home in Orange City Wednesday afternoon at 3 o’clock following a lingering illness. Funeral services will be held Friday at the First Reformed Church at Orange City. Survivors include his widow and five children [same as in the above obit]. There are twenty-three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Relatives who attended the funeral of Mr. J. Visser last Friday were his only brother, Mr. and Mrs. K. Visser of Prinsburg, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. W. Visser of Corsica, S. Dak., Messrs and Mesdames Swets and Art Visser of Prinsburg, John Groen and daughter of Ireton, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Harms, Mesdames John Van Houten and W. Duitsman and son Harm of Clara City, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Visser of Grand Rapids, Mich. were unable to come.

An obituary in De Volksvriend (in Dutch) adds that he was born February 3, 1856 in Paesens, Friesland, Netherlands. In 1880 he married Lena Rederus, who survives him. In 1893 they moved to America and settled on a farm in the vicinity of Clara City, Minn. After having lived there for twelve years they came to Sioux County in 1909. This obit numbers their descendants as 25 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

His death certificate (informant Mrs. Wm. Kalsbeek) has Mr. John Auther Visser, resident of Orange City for 32 years; retired farmer; wife Lena Rederus; born Feb. 16, 1956 in Paasen, Netherlands; father Auther Visser, mother’s name not known; died at 3:00 p.m. October 15, 1941; cause, chronic nephritis, due to senility.
