Mrs. A. E. Goebel Dies at Alhambra

Mrs. A. E. Goebel, the former Helen Hoxmeier, passed on at her home in Alhambra, Calif. on Saturday, Sept. 27th, according to news received by her nieces and nephew here. She was 78 years of age.

For many years the family lived in Alton, where Mr. Goebel was in the men’s clothing business. About fourteen years ago, some time after the death of Mr. Goebel, Mrs. Goebel and daughters left Alton to make their home in California. A son George, died a year ago and the only survivors are Mrs. Goebel’s two daughters, May and Clara and one granddaughter; also two brothers, John Hoxmeier of Bellevue, Rt. Rev. G. L. Hoxmeier of Lansing and one sister, Mrs. Niemeyer of Elkader.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her husband’s obituary (posted separately) gives his name as Anthony E. Goebel, and her name as Lena or Helena.

The California Death Index has Helena Goebel, born 23 July 1863 in Iowa, died 27 Sep 1941 in Los Angeles, mother’s maiden name Nemmers, father’s surname Haxmeier [i.e., Hoxmeier].

The Allamakee County (Iowa) marriage register for 1886/1887 has groom Anthony E. Goebel, age 27, resident of Alton, Iowa, a merchant, born in Luxemberg, Dubuque County, Iowa, parents Ernst Goebel and Catherine Pfiffer; bride Helena Hoxmeier, age 24, resident of Lansing, Iowa, born in St. Donatus, Jackson County, Iowa, parents Henry Hoxmeier and Susan Nemmers; married in Lansing July 19, 1887.

In the 1900 U.S. census they are living in Alton, where Anthony is a clothier. He died in 1909. In 1910 Helena is still living in Alton with her three children; she has her own income, Mary C. (21) is a music teacher, and George T. (17) is a clothing store salesman. In 1920 Helena, Mary, and Clara are still in Alton, none with employment. They are in Alton in 1925, but by 1930 she is in Alhambra with all three children, who are working in a sausage plant, Mary (42) as a secretary, George (38) as a manager, and Clara (36) as a saleslady. In 1940 Mary C. is head of the household, with Clara M. and Helena living with her; Mary and Clara do housework in private households.
