Eileen J. Onken, 86, of Sioux City, IA passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022, at UnityPoint Health – St. Luke’s Hospital.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2022, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ireton, IA. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2022 at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m.

Eileen was born on a farm northeast of Akron, IA on April 29, 1936 to William and Anna (Hillrichs) Barinsky. She was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Akron, IA, on June 21, 1936. She received her religious instruction and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron in June of 1950.

She attended elementary school at Portland Township #4 (Riverview). She transferred to Akron Public School in the sixth grade, and attended Akron High School, graduating in 1954.

She was united in marriage to Lennis Onken on June 27, 1959 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, rural Akron, IA. He passed away in December of 2015. They had one child, Brent Onken. She was a longtime member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

Eileen was employed by the Le Mars Mutual Insurance Company in Le Mars, IA; the Iowa State Employment Service and Albertsons, both in Sioux City; the Civil Service Commission; the Sioux City Public School system; and the City of Sioux City, retiring in 2000.

After retirement, Eileen and Lennis enjoyed spending the winter months in South Texas.

She is survived by one son Brent and his wife Carmen of Derby, KS; three granddaughters Jessica Onken of Wichita, KS, Rachel Onken of Franklin, NJ, and Sarah Onken of Derby, KS; one sister Lorraine (Wayne) Hamilton of Alcester, SD; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lennis; her parents William and Anna Barinsky; two brothers Raymond Barinsky and Lowell Barinsky; one sister Gladys Eden; as well as her in-laws Andy and Sidonia Onken.
