There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating.

Alan Frank was born on January 15, 1952, in Orange City, the youngest of three children born to Frank and Alice (Doppenberg) Van Der Zwaag. He grew up in Orange City and graduated from the Maurice – Orange City High School in 1970, before enrolling at Northwestern College in Orange City.

On July 28, 1972, he was united in marriage to Linda Ruth Schoon at the Trinity Reformed Church in Sibley. They made their home in Orange City, where Alan continued his education at Northwestern College, and worked part-time at Diamond Vogel Paint. He completed his bachelor's degree in math and chemistry in 1974 and started working full-time at the paint factory. After a brief time in the chemistry department, Alan was able to put his interest in computers to use as the company’s first Information Technology Professional. In the mid 1990’s, Alan accepted a position with the Orange City Hospital, as they worked to adapt to the use of computers in health care. When the new Orange City Area Health System opened in 2006, he worked diligently to make sure the transition to the new facility was as smooth as possible for both patients and staff. Health and memory issues forced him to voluntarily retire in 2013, and the following year he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

Mr. Vander Zwaag was a life-long member of the First Reformed Church, where he had served several terms on the church’s consistory. He was an avid reader, primarily reading books and periodicals related to his work. He also liked to keep informed on current events through the newspaper and news broadcasts. He enjoyed being with his family, often spending summers at Lake Okoboji, and more recently making frequent trips to the Omaha area with Linda to see their children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of almost fifty years, Linda, of Orange City; a son and his wife, Dr. Kristofer and Roberta Vander Zwaag, and their six children, Katryna, Sofia, Amelia, Sebastian, Chloe, and Charlotte; a daughter and her husband, Dr. Allyson and John Hascall, and their four children, Keaton, Lucy, Teddy, and John David, all of Omaha; a sister, Anna Beth Vermeer, of Orange City; and a brother-in-law, Ron Van Der Meide, of Cedar Falls. He is also survived by Linda’s family including three of her sisters, Mary, and her husband, Henry Iedema, of Sanborn; Lois Nieuwendorp, of Willmar, Minnesota; and Sharon, and her husband, Kyle Carroll, of Maysville, Missouri; her three brothers, Robert Schoon, and his wife, Helen, of Spirit Lake; Greg Schoon, of Tucson, Arizona; and Randy Schoon, and his wife, Renee, of Rochester, Minnesota; and her brother-in-law, Arlyn Norris, of Tucson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews on both sides of their family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Van Der Meide; two brothers-in-law, Ethan Vermeer and Robert Nieuwendorp; and a sister-in-law, Wanda Norris.

Memorials will be given to the Orange City Area Health System.
