Mrs. LaVonne Kroese, age 87, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday, June 15, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Thursday, June 16, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Adam Van Der Stoep officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Matilda LaVonne was born on January 26, 1935, on her parents’ farm north of Hull. She was one of seven girls born to John and Kate (Korthals) Van Den Oever and was welcomed by three half-siblings. She grew up on the farm and attended the Lincoln Township #6 Country School and the Hull Christian School. As a young woman, she did housekeeping for several area families and at the Hull Hospital.

She was united in marriage to Hilmore Kroese on September 10, 1953, in Hull. Together they made their home in Hull where they raised their two sons. In addition to being a wife and mother, LaVonne also helped with bookwork for Hilmore’s construction business. Hilmore passed away on December 7, 2018, in Sioux Center, after more than 68 years of marriage. LaVonne was able to continue living in her home until earlier this month when she became a resident of the Pleasant Acres Care Center.

Mrs. Kroese was a member of the First Reformed Church, where she regularly attended the adult Sunday School classes and faithfully washed and ironed the church’s kitchen laundry. She enjoyed decorating her home and kept it immaculately clean. John Wesley’s famous quote, “cleanliness is next to godliness”, was something LaVonne took to heart, and it helped to create a strong work ethic throughout her life. Her children and their families were the joy of her life, and she looked forward to seeing her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her two sons and their wives, David and Kay (Wynia) Kroese, of Hull; and Darrel and Karla (Lourens) Kroese, of Orange City; seven grandchildren, Eric Kroese, and his wife, Bobbie; Scott Kroese; Alison Kroese; Justin Kroese, and his wife, Allison; Jessica, and her husband, Brandon Bonnema; Kendra, and her husband, Storm Wagner; and Kelsey, and her husband, Taylor Deegan; thirteen great-grandchildren, Sophia, Emma, Olivia, Noah, Hannah, Julia, and Judah Kroese; Jacob, Klayton, and Hazel Kroese; Bentley and Sayler Bonnema; and Calum Deegan; two sisters, Joan Boeve and Evelyn Rens, both of Hills, Minnesota; and four sisters-in-law, Jo Ludema, of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Belle, and her husband, Ken Draayer, of Hull; Harriet Kroese, of Orange City; and Agnes Kroese, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jenna Kroese; four sisters and their husbands, Cynthia and Ralph Oostra; Henrietta and George Wassenaar; Catherine and John Elmer DeWit; and Wilmina and Anthony Smit; a half-brother and his wife, John and Claretta Mulder; two half-sisters and their husbands, Gertrude and Herman Vander Vliet; and Jean and John Russell Vander Zwaaag; and five brothers-in-law, Donald Boeve; Marvin Rens; Gerald Kroese, and his wife, Hendrene; Albert Kroese, and his wife, Eleanor; Ken Ludema; and Irvin Kroese.

Memorials will be given to Words of Hope, the Hull Christian School, and the Orange City Christian School.
