Mrs. Louisa Zalme Called Beyond

Mrs. Louisa Fredericka Zalme (nee Franssen), a resident of Alton since 1921, passed on at the De Bey hospital in Orange City Wednesday night, June 18th at 10 o’clock. She had been ill for about a year, but was at the hospital just a day when the end came.

She was born in The Hague, Netherlands on Sept. 26th, 1856, and was married in 1879 to Marinus Zalme. The couple came to the United States in 1882 and located at Lesters Junction, Vermont, where Mr. Zalme engaged in his occupation of florist. They later lived at Hyde Park and Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Ridgewood, N.J. In 1921 they came to Alton, where their son and family had preceded them. Mr. Zalme died 14 years ago.

Mrs. Zalme is survived by an only son, Wm. Zalme of Alton, nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, and by one sister who lives in Holland. She was a good woman, respected and loved by neighbors and friends.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday afternoon and at the First Ref. church, in charge of Rev. Tinklenberg, with burial in Nassau Township cemetery.

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. No death certificate for her was readily located online.

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index record for groom Marinus Gerardus Paulus Zalme, age 24, a florist, parents Willem Antonie Zalme, a florist, and Geertruida Catharina de Ruijter; bride Frederika Louisa Wilhelmina Franssen, age 22, parents Johannes Franssen and Frederika Louisa Wilhelmina Neukirchen; married 6 Aug 1879 in ‘s-Gravenhage, Den Haag, South Holland.

See the obituary for Marinus Zalme (posted separately) for census entries for them in New Jersey and New York. The 1925 Iowa state census shows Marinus (71) and Louisa (71) living in Alton in a home that they own freehold, in the U.S. 46 years and Iowa 3 years. Marinus’ parents are William Zalme and Gertrude DeRuiter. Louisa’s mother is Fredricke Unkinge[?], father’s name unknown. Louisa is listed in both the 1930 and 1940 U.S. censuses, age 73 and 83, living in Alton by herself in a home she owns, although William Zalme and his family live not far away. The 1930 census shows her as having immigrated in 1882, naturalized.
