DEATH CALLS J. GROSSENBURG AT WINNER S.D.

Miss Dora Sandschulte received word of the death of Mr. John Grossenburg, early settler here, which occurred on Monday at Winner, S.D.

Mr. Grossenburg was born at Muskady, Wis., in March, 1859. He married, in 1896, here in Rock Valley, Miss Mabel Hersinger. The young couple made their home on a farm near Rock Valley and resided there until a couple of months ago when he retired from farming and moved to Winner, S.D.

Surviving, besides his widow, are three daughters—Mrs. F. Fowler of Sioux City, Mrs. Clyde Jones of Winner and Mrs. L. Hutton of Sturges, S.D.; three sons—Charlie, John and Leo of Winner; and three sisters—Mrs. L. S. Large, Rock Valley; Mrs. De Voe, Hills, Minn.; and Miss Minnie Grossenburg of Santa Ana, Calif.

Funeral services were to be held at Winner but relatives and friends here had not been advised of the time and day when The Bee went to press.

Mr. Grossenburg was one of the pioneer settlers in this vicinity whose zeal and hard work made the prairie bloom like a rose. A host of friends here regret to learn of his passing.

JOHN GROSSENBURG

John Grossenburg, Sr., was born March 8, 1858 in Lancaster, Wisconsin, and died in the home of his son, Charles, at Winner, S.D., on June 23, 1941, at the age of 83 years 3 months and 15 days.

In the year 1886 he left Wisconsin, moving to Rock Valley, Iowa, bringing with him his parents, one brother, and four sisters. He was united in marriage with Mable Hirschinger at Rock Valley, Iowa, on Christmas day, 1894. To this union were born six children: Leo Grossenburg and his twin sister, Mrs. Leona Jones, Charles and John Jr., all living in Winner, S.D. and vicinity; Mrs. Brenda Fowler of Sioux City, Iowa, and Mrs. Marie Hutton of Sturgis, S.D.

He is survived by his widow and his entire immediate family, four sisters and fourteen grandchildren, who will always remember him as a kind and loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. One beloved granddaughter, Brenda Marcia Fowler, preceded him in death.

Mr. Grossenburg has resided on a farm near Rock Valley, Iowa, since 1894, having had the active management until March 1st of this year when, due to ill health, he rented his farm and moved to Winner, S.D., where he intended to make his home.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his life years as 1858-1941; buried in Winner, S.D., City Cemetery; spouse Mable Grossenburg (1972-1946). There is a photo of his headstone.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1895/1896 has groom John Grossenburg Jr., age 35, resident of Rock Valley, occupation real estate, born in Muscoda, Wis., parents John Grossenburg and ---- Stoufer; bride Mable Hirschinger, age 23, resident of Rock Valley, born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, parents Jacob Hirschinger and Mary Klein; married in Rock Valley Dec. 25, 1895.

The 1940 U.S. census shows John (82) and Mabel (68) farming in Plato Township, Sioux County, with a young hired couple working for them.
