John W. Vander Burg

Relatives in Orange City received a telegram Monday stating that J. W. Vander Burg of Hospers had died Sunday in Long Beach, Calif. at the home of his children, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Romberg. He was 65 years old and his death was caused by complications. Mr. and Mrs. Vander Burg spent the winter in California and Mr. Vander Burg was sick for several weeks. Mr. Vander Burg served as editor of the Hospers Tribune for many years.

He is survived by his widow; 5 children: Marie, Mrs. Gordon Howes of Cleveland Ohio; Willis of Boyden; Evadeane, Mrs. Thielen Stevens of Waterloo Ia.; Albertus of Maquoketa, Ia.; and Sebianne, Mrs. Richard Romberg of Long Beach Calif.; 10 grandchildren; mother Mrs. Wm. Vander Burg of Orange City; 1 brother and 4 sisters: Anna, Mrs. J. Vander Mey of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mary, Mrs. Peter Wiersma, Orange City; Wm. of Holland, Minn., Dena of Orange City and Gertrude, Mrs. Henry Alberda of Manhattan, Montana.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the home in Hospers and at 1:30 in the First Chr. Ref. Church of Hospers with Rev. Mr. Geerlings in charge. Burial will be made in the Orange City cemetery.

Veteran Sioux Co. Newspaper Man Passes On

John W. Vanderburg of Hospers died on Sunday morning at 11:30 o’clock, May 4, 1941, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Richard Romberg in Long Beach, Calif. He was 64 years, 7 months and 8 days old at the time of his death. Although he had been ill for two months, the immediate cause of his death was heart failure.

He was born in Riljsen, Overijsel, Netherlands, on Sept. 16, 1876, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vanderburg. He came to America with his parents at the age of 5 years, lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Later the family moved to Newkirk, Iowa, where they lived for a few years. The family then located in Orange City where the deceased was employed as a printer at De Volksvriend for 15 years.

He was married to Adrianna Elizabeth, daughter of Mrs. J. A. Brink, of Orange City, at the latter’s home on Dec. 11, 1901. To this union were born: Willis G. Vanderburg, Boyden; Marie, Mrs. Gordon L. Howes, Cleveland, O.; John Albertus, Maquoketa; Evadeane, Mrs. Thielan L. Stevens, Waterloo; Siebieann, Mrs. Richard Romberg, Long Beach, Calif.

Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Vanderburg moved to LeMars where Mr. Vanderburg was foreman of the LeMars Globe Post. Later the family moved to Ashton where they published the Ashton Leader for seven years. He then sold the Leader and published the Sheldon Mail at Sheldon for a number of years. Afterward the family moved to Platte, S.D., where the deceased was engaged in the mercantile business for two years. The family moved to Hospers in 1914 where Mr. Vanderburg published the Hospers Tribune for almost twenty-eight years.

Funeral services were held at the Dillday mortuary in Long Beach, Calif., at 11 o’clock, Monday, May 5th, Rev. J. De Jong of the First Reformed church of Hynes, Calif., having charge. At the close Mrs. Peter Kooiman, a niece, sang “Does Jesus Care.”

The remains were escorted to Hospers, Iowa, by Mrs. Vanderburg and daughter, Mrs. Richard Romberg of Long Beach, Calif. Funeral services were held at the home in Hospers in Saturday, May 10, at 1 o’clock. Final services were held in the Christian Reformed church at 1:30 o’clock with Rev. Geerlings in charge. Miss Elizabeth Vanderkamp sang one of his favorite hymns, “Jesus Is Tenderly Calling Me Home.” Interment was made in the Orange City cemetery.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. W. Vanderburg, age 93, of Orange City; his widow and five children and ten grandchildren, four sisters, Mrs. Anna Vander Mey of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Peter Wiersma, Orange City; Miss Dena Vanderburg, Orange City, and Mrs. Henry Alberda of Manhatten, Montana; and one brother, William of Holland, Minn.

Out-of-town relatives who attended the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Vanderburg, Jr., and children and Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Korver of Holland, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Alberda and children of Manhatten, Montana; J. W. Vanderburg, George Vanderburg and Mrs. G. Van Steenwyk of Sioux City; Abe Brink and daughter Cora and Mr. and Mrs. C. Ver Steeg of Harrison, S.D.; Mrs. John Menning and Eben Brink of Sioux Center; G. P. Kooiman of Boyden; Mr. and Mrs. Art Broekhuis and daughters Carolyn and Mildred; Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Brink and children; Mrs. Bert Brink; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vander Stoep; Mrs. Arnold Wassink; Allen Gillan and daughters, Selia, Mrs. P. Skellhaus, and Mrs. Charles Fry; Mr. and Mrs. Will Kooiman, John Kooiman, Mr. and Mrs. George Gulker; Mrs. John Zwart, and Henry Sohl of Edgerton, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Wiersma and daughter Sadie, John Brink Sr., Mr. and Mrs. E. Reinders, Mr. and Mrs. John Van Peursem, Mr. Abe Van Peursem and Marion Wiersma of Orange City.

The pallbearers were nephews of Mr. Vanderburg: Henry Vanderburg, Marion Wiersma, Peter Alberda, Jerry Brink, Gerrit P. Kooiman, and John Van Peursem.

The 1900 U.S. census shows him at age 23, single, living in Ireton, Sioux County, immigrated from the Netherlands in 1881, working as a printer. By 1910 he is naturalized.

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) shows him age 41, printer and published of the Hospers Tribune, medium height and build, blue eyes, brown hair.
