From the Alton Democrat, January 31, 1930:

John Porter died at his home in Orange City January 20 at the age of 66 years. He was born in the Netherlands Nov. 5, 1863, coming to this country in 1889. In 1905 he came to Sioux county and was married at Orange City to Mrs. R. L. Bouma April 14, 1908, who survives her husband.

He is survived by two children, Mrs. Martin Dykstra of Orange City and Jake Porter of LeMars, and by four stepchildren, Lou Bouma of LeMars, Misses Rena and Etta Bouma, at home, and Andrew Bouma of Carnes.

Funeral services were held at the First Reformed church of Orange City on January 23 with the pastor, Rev. H. Colenbrander, officiating. The Democrat joins in sincere sympathy to the bereaved family.

His death certificate (informant Mrs. John Porter) has John J. Porter, retired farmer; born Nov. 5, 1863 in Holland; parents Jacob Porter and Grietje Sneider; died at 4:10 p.m. January 20, 1930; cause, carcinoma [illegible] lymph glands, onset Oct. 1929; buried at Orange City.

He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. His FindaGrave.com page has John Porter (family name in the Netherlands was Porte), born 5 Nov 1863 in Sint Annaparochie, Het Bildt Municipality, Friesland, Netherlands; died 20 Jan 1930 in Orange City; buried in West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City. Wife Gertrude Zijlstra Bouma Porter (1870-1941, married 1908). Children Gertrude Porter Dykstra De Zeeuw (1887-1969) and Jacob John Porter (1888-1989). There is a photo of his headstone: “John Porter 1863-1929.”

The 1900 census for Rockton Township, Winnebago County, Illinois, has a family that may be his: John Porter, age 35, born Feb 1865 in Holland, married 15 years, immigrated in 1889, an alien, a farm laborer; wife Rhoda, age 36, born Dec. 1863 in Holland, mother of 3 children, 3 living; children Gertrude (14) and Jacob (12), born in Holland, and Alice (10), born in Michigan.
