From the Alton Democrat, April 11, 1941, Hospers news:

Margene, thirteen-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Salsma of east of Hospers, died shortly after noon Friday, April 4th, at a Hull hospital following a week’s illness.

Margene was born February 26, 1940, on a farm near Sanborn and leaves to mourn her early departure her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Salsma, and two brothers, Richard and John.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 1 o’clock P.M. at the home and 1:30 in the First Ref. church and were in charge of Rev. G. Doctor, assisted by Rev. J. Straks of Sanborn. Interment was made at the Sheldon cemetery.

The Salsmas moved to the Hospers vicinity only last month.

Briefer notices of her death in other area newspapers give the family surname as Solsma.

Her death certificate has Margene Annetta Solsma; residence rural 1 mile east and1/4 mile south of Hospers; born Feb. 16, 1940 in Sanborn, Iowa; parents John Solsma, born in Alton, Iowa, and Agnes Roorda, born in Ypsalante, N.D.; died in the Hull Hospital, where she had been a patient 4 days, at 3 p.m. April 4, 1941; cause, influenza meningitis, duration 3 days, due to influenza and dysentery, duration 2 days; buried in East Lawn Cemetery, Sheldon.
