From the Alton Democrat, March 7, 1941, Granville news:

CARL HANSEL

Carl Hansel, 82 years old, passed away at 6:30 A.M., at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fischer.

Carl Hansel was born June 1, 1858, at Hildmannsfeld, Germany, and came to the U.S. in 1895. His wife, Sophia Fischer, had emigrated previously. They farmed south of Granville and moved to town in 1910. His wife passed away in 1918 and Mr. Hansel lived at his home until a few weeks before his death. He moved into the home of Mr. and Mrs, Carl Fischer who cared for him until the hour of his death.

Relatives who survive are Mr. and Mrs. Bert Schnuur Sr., Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fischer, Butte, Mont., Mr. and Mrs. Carl Fischer of Granville.

Funeral services were held on Feb. 28th, 1941, Rev. J. J. Dalhoff officiating. The pallbearers were Bert Schnuur, Jr., Henry Schnuur, Joseph Bachmann, Joe Reim, Hy. Moos and Joe Miller. Interment was made in the St. Joseph’s cemetery

Others who attended funeral services were Mr. Jas. Kohler and daughter Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schnuur, Mrs. Bert Schnuur, Jr., Herman Schnuur, Hospers, Mrs. Henry Schnuur, Mr. and Mrs. John Niichel, Mrs. Alfred Wins, Primghar and Mr. Nick Betz of Primghar.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate (informant Carl Vischer) has Carl Hansel, age 82 years, 6 months, 25 days; widower of Sofie Hansel; born June 1, 1858 in Germany; parents’ names not known; resident of Granville, Sioux County, in this community 31 years; a retired farmer; died at 6 a.m. February 26, 1941; cause, carcinoma stomach, duration 3 months.

He is not listed in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, although there is an entry for Hansel, Sophia, born 17 April 1863, died 12 Dec 1918, St, Josephs Cemetery, Granville IA. No FindaGrave.com page was found for either of them.

The 1930 U.S. census shows him as Carl Hanzel, age 72, widowed, age at first marriage 35; owns his home, value $5000; born in Germany; immigrated 1895, naturalized; no occupation. He lives next door to Carl Fischer, proprietor of a general merchandise store, and his family. He was not found in the 1940 census via a name search, but a search for Carl Fischer found that family, with an 82-year-old neighbor indexed as Carl Housel.

No other information was readily located for either Carl or Sophia/Sofia Hansel.
