Pioneer Woman Passes On

Mrs. Agatha Vander Aarde passed away last week Friday at 8:15 p.m. at the age of 90 years, 11 months, and 8 days. She had been in bed for about a week and old age was the cause of her death.

She was the former Agatha Eirks and was born March 13, 1850 in the Province of North Holland, the Netherlands. In 1871 she was united in marriage to Bastian Vander Aarde and came to Orange City in the year 1874. Five children were born to this union, two of them died in infancy. One daughter, Dora, passed away at the age of 20 and another daughter, Elizabeth, Mrs. Herman Te Paske died in 1927. Mr. Vander Aarde died in 1921.

Mrs. Vander Aarde was one of the first settlers in Orange City, and made her home with the Herman Te Paske family for about 30 years.

She is survived by 1 son Gerrit of Milford, Ia., 2 step sons, Bastian of Orange City and Anne of Hartley, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the house with Rev. Mr. L. Nattress in charge and at 1:30 in the First Ref. church with Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander officiating. Burial was made in the Orange City cemetery.

Aged Mother Passes On

After a short illness of one week Mrs. Bastian Vande Aarde died Friday evening, Feb. 21, in the home of her granddaughters, the Misses Agatha and Johanna Te Paske, at the age of 90 years, 11 months and one week.

Agatha Erks was born in North Holland, The Netherlands, on March 18, 1850. While still in The Netherlands she was married to Bastian Vande Aarde and three years later the couple came to America and settled in Orange City. Five children were born to this union, two having passed on in infancy. Dora died in 1879 [i.e., 1899] and Elizabeth, Mrs. Herman Te Paske, in 1927. One son, Gerrit of Milford and two step-children, Bastian of Orange City and Anne of Hartley, survive her. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great grandchildren and several great, great grandchildren.

For ten years Mr. and Mrs Vande Aarde made their home with Mr. and Mrs. H. Te Paske. In 1921 Mr. Vande Aarde passed away and his widow continued to make her home with the Te Paskes. She was active and about the house until the time of her sickness.

Funeral services were held on Monday by Rev. Nattress at the home and by Rev. Colenbrander at the First Ref. church. Many out-of-town people paid their respects to this beloved mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Agatha Vande Aarde, 91, Passed Away At Orange City

Mrs. Agatha Vande Aarde passed away at her home in Orange City on Friday evening at about 8 o’clock. She was 91 years old. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Ref. Church with Rev. Colenbrander officiating. She was buried at Orange City. She is survived by one son, Gerrit of Milford, two step sons, Bastian of Orange City and Nanny of Hartley. She was the grandmother of Henry Te Paske.

Vander Aarde; born March 13, 1850 in the Netherlands; resident of the U.S. 66 years; father Bastian Eriks, mother’s name unknown; died at home at 8 p.m. February 21, 1941; cause, senility, and acute suppurratrix[?] paratitis [parotitis, swelling of the parotid gland], left, duration 2 days; buried at Orange City.

Her Sioux County Cemetery Index entry has Vander Aarde, Mother, b. 13 Mar 1850, d. 21 Feb 1941, West Lawn Cemetery, Orange City IA. Her FindaGrave.com page has Aagtje “Agatha” Eriks Vander Aarde; born in Barsingerhorn, Hollands Kroon Municipality, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, with a photo of her headstone.
