Former Granville Lady Passes On

Mrs. Nick Prevos, nee Margaret Moos of Granville, died Feb. 21 at the Allan Memorial hospital in Waterloo where she was a patient after an illness of four months.

Mrs. Prevos lived at Granville and Paullina until the time of her marriage when she left for Waterloo. She was married on June 6, 1922. She was employed at Paullina for a few years before her marriage.

She is survived by three sons, Wilford, 19, Christ, 17, and Michael, 14; by the following sisters and brothers: Kathryn, Mrs. Nick Smilas, Waterloo; Mary, Mrs. Nick Maharras, Davenport; Peter Moos, Paullina; Susie, Mrs. Felix Halverson, Thompson; Henry Moos of Granville and Nick Moos of Waterloo.

Funeral services were held at Waterloo on Feb. 24th with Rev. Msgr. E. J. Dougherty officiating and interment was in Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers were Tony Berent, Peter Zarifee, J. Cook, Paul George, Tom Girkains, J. Boemecke. Relatives present from out of town were Mr. and Mrs. Peter Moos and son Ronald of Paullina, Mr. and Mrs. Felix Halverson and daughter Phyllis of Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Moos and sons Kenneth and Marvin of Granville, Mary Smilas and Miss Anna Smilas of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. P. C. Ricker of Granville.

Mrs. Prevos was a devoted wife and mother and friends here deeply regret her early passing.

MRS. NICHOLAS PREVAS

Funeral for Mrs. Nicholas Prevas, 317 Sunnyside avenue, who died Friday afternoon in Allen Memorial hospital of a complication of ailments, will be conducted at 9 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic church by Right Rev. Msgr. E. J. Dougherty. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. She was 39 years old.

Born Margaret Moos Jan. 14, 1902, at Granville, Ia., she was a daughter of Peter and Margaret Moos. She was married to N. C. Prevas June 6, 1922, in Waterloo. They have resided here since their marriage. Mrs. Prevas was a member of Sacred Heart parish.

Surviving are her husband; three sons, Wilfred P., Christ N. and Michael N., all at home; three brothers, Peter Moos of Paullina, Ia., Henry Moos of Granville, Nicholas Moos of 1409 Jefferson street; three sisters, Mrs. Nick Smiles of 208 Jefferson, Mrs. Nick Mahres of Davenport, Ia., Mrs. Felix Haverson of Thompson, Ia. Her parents are dead.

The body was taken to Peterson Bros. funeral home.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate (informant Nick Prevas) has Mrs. Margaret Prevas, wife of Nicholas C. Prevas; resident of 317 Sunnyside Ave., Waterloo; resident of Waterloo about 19 years; born January 14, 1902 in Granville; parents Peter Moos, born in Germany, and Margaret Schaak, born in Belgium; died at the Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, where she had been a patient about two hours, at 3 p.m. February 21, 1941; cause, septicemia, general, duration 1 week; due to carcinomatosis from cancer of cervix, duration 18 months; buried in Calvary Cemetery, Waterloo.

Her FindaGrave.com page adds a photo of Nicholas and Margaret, and a photo of their joint headstone. An added note (unascribed) says they were the parents of three sons, Wilfred (1922-2005), Christ (1924-1999), and Michael (1927-1998).

The Iowa marriage certificate for Nicholas Prevas and Margaret Moos says he is a restaurant manager, age 29, born in Greece, father Christ, mother’s maiden name Basse, resident of Waterloo; she is 23, resident of Granville, parents Pete Moos and Maggie; married in Waterloo September 14, 1924.

The 1930 U.S. census for Waterloo says they were married when he was 25 and she was 18; spells their oldest son’s name Wifred; Nicholas was born in Greece, immigrated in 1902, has taken out first papers; a cook in a restaurant. The 1940 census spells their oldest son’s name Wilford; Nick’s occupation is proprietor, sandwich shop.

Nicholas Prevas’ petition for citizenship gives his name as Nickolas Christ Prevezanos, resident of Waterloo, Iowa, a restauranteur; born Dec. 23, 1894 in Kamdela, Mantenia, Greece; emigrated to the U.S. on the SS Patris, arriving in New York on September 8, 1912. Married wife Margaret Prevas on June 6, 1924 at Waterloo. They have two children: Chris, born Dec. 21, 1925 at Waterloo, and Michael, born Jan. 18, 1927 at Marshalltown, Iowa. His petition asks that his name be changed to Nickolas Christ Prevas.

The 1920 census for Waterloo shows Nick C. Prevas, age 25, born in Greece, a lunch counter cook, married to Pearl B. Prevas, age 25. Wilfred/Wilford may have been their son.
