From the Rock Valley Bee, January 3, 1941:

DEATH CALLS GRANDSON OF R. V. PIONEERS

John Lyden Cauley passed away at Los Angeles, Calif., on December 22 of flu and a heart condition.

He was born at Larchwood, February 8, 1909, the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. John Cauley, graduating from the Larchwood high school and then entering the University of Wyoming. His health failed him and he returned to Sioux Falls to work for an insurance company, later being employed by the Fuller Brush company. Last summer he went to Los Angeles to enter college and study optometry.

The remains were sent to Sioux Falls to the home of his parents and funeral services were held Monday morning, December 30, at St. Joseph’s cathedral. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Mahoney celebrated requiem high mass. Burial was at the Catholic cemetery at Larchwood.

The funeral services were largely attended and many beautiful floral tributes as well as the large gathering of relatives and friends attested to the high esteem in which he was held.

Mr. Cauley is survived by five sisters and one brother—Lucile of Gurnsey, Wyo.; Lois and Virginia of Los Angeles; Mrs. Francis Armstrong and Mrs. Oscar Houtari, and Francis Cauley, all of Sioux Falls.

Those from Rock Valley attending the funeral included Mrs. Anna Buckley, Miss Esther Buckley, James and Miss Mary Quinlan, Mrs. Mary McNamara and son Walter, Mrs. Jennie Hevern and son William, and Mrs. Joe Hevern.

John Lyden, as he was known to his friends, was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. P. L. Solon, early pioneers of this vicinity, and the son of the former Emma Solon.
