Former Rock Valley Resident Died Last Week in Washington

Lemi Vail of Clarkston, Wash., a former Rock Valley resident and a graduate of the Rock Valley high school passed away at his home Friday, July 18, of a cerebral hemorrhage. He was 51 years old.

He was superintendent of schools in Montana and Washington before entering the typewriter business in Clarkston, a position which he held until his death.

He leaves to mourn his wife, four children and four grandchildren. One brother, Harry Vail of Rapid City, S. D., and three sisters, Mrs. Clifford Johnson of Fairview, S. D., Mrs. Louis Dela Garza of Los Angeles and Mrs. Joe Oldenkamp of Rock Valley.

L. W. VAIL, CLARKSTON BUSINESS MAN, CALLED

CLARKSTON, Wash., July 19.—L. W. Vail, 51, Clarkston businessman, died Thursday night at Newport, Wash., of a cerebral hemorrhage while on a brief vacation. His home was at 1240 Eighth street in Clarkston. Born at Fredricksburg, Iowa, he married Pearl F. Bauman July 17, 1924. The couple made their home at Spokane until 1937 when they came to Clarkston where he founded the Vail Office Equipment company.

Survivors include his widow at Clarkston; three sons, Robert, Richard and Donald Vail, all of Clarkston; and a daughter, Mrs. Frances Richmond, Walla Walla.

His FindaGrave.com page has Lemi William Vail, born 16 Jan 1900 at Fredericksburg, Chickasaw County, Iowa; died 21 July 1952 in Clarkston, Asotin County, Washington; buried in Vineland Cemetery, Clarkston. Parents William Edward Vail (1874-1940) and Anna Laura Schunndlack Vail (1878-1946). Wife Pearl F. Bauman Vail Wilken (1902-1990); her FindaGrave page does not give her second husband’s full name. Two children listed: Frances Pearl Vail Richmond (1928-1997) and Robert William Vail (1930-2009). There is a photo of his headstone, which gives his life dates as 1901-1940.

The Washington Select Death Index on Ancestry.com gives his death date as 17 July 1952.

Their marriage record has groom Lemi W. Vail [erroneously transcribed on Ancestry as Lewis], age 23, resident of Rock Valley, Iowa, a student, born at Fredericksburg, Iowa, parents W. E. Vail and Anna Schmudlack; bride Pearl F. Bauman, age 22, resident of Sheldon, Iowa, born at Rock Valley, parents Frank Bauman and Emma Wattawa; married at Rock Rapids, Iowa, July 17, 1924.

His World War II draft registration card (Feb. 1942) has Lemi William Vail, age 41; residence Route 2, Clarkston, Washington; born January 16, 1901 at Fredricksburg, Iowa; person who will always know his address, Mrs. Pearl Vail; occupation Vail Typewriter Supply, Lewiston, Idaho; height 5’10”, weight 180 pounds; race white, eyes blue, hair brown, complexion ruddy.
