Mary M. ArensMary M. Arens, 96, Pipestone, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004 at Ashton Care Center, Pipestone.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 14 at St. Martin Catholic Church, Woodstock, with Father Martin Schaefer officiating.
Honorary casket bearers were Arlie Claussen, Howard Dysthe, Merle Fenicle and Bill Arens.
Casket bearers were Darin Staab, Larry, David, Marvin, Wally and Don Slinger.
Interment was in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery.
Mary Martha Arens was born to Henry and Elizabeth (Bult) Slinger on Sept. 20, 1908 on a farm near Granville, Iowa. In March 1913 the family moved to a farm in Chanarambie Township in Murray County. She grew up on this farm and attended country school, receiving her diploma after the eighth grade. She helped at home, but also helped in homes around the neighborhood, especially during threshing time.
She worked at Bievers General Store in Woodstock in 1942. She continued working there, through several ownership changes, until 1963. She married John Charles Arens on May 1, 1948 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Woodstock. They lived on an acreage by Woodstock for the 56 years they were together. After John’s death in August 2003, Mary spent just over a year in Slayton with her sister, Margaret Slinger. After a stroke on Oct. 5, 2004 she entered the Pipestone County Medical Center and subsequently the Ashton Care Center.
Angela came to live with them in September of 1968 and was adopted in August 1987. Mary was active in St. Martin’s Ladies Aid and was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Angela (John) Putnam, Dodge Center; three grandchildren; sisters, Helen (Ed) Burkard, Green Bay, Wisc.; Agnes Chapman, Lake Wilson; Margaret Slinger, Slayton; and Betty (Wayne) Staab, Pipestone; her brothers, Joe (Rosie) Slinger, Hardwick; Henry (Mary) Slinger, Jackson; Bill (Lois) Slinger, Northfield; and Bernard (Judy) Slinger, Casa Grande, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Josephine Arens, Jasper.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; one sister, Martha Pfeiffer and three brothers and their spouses, Edward Slinger, Walter and Evelyn Slinger and Louis and Rita Slinger.

Mary Martha Arens
Mary Martha Arens was born the second child of thirteen children to Henry and Elizabeth (Suit) Slinger on September 20, 1908 on a farm near Granville, Iowa. She was united in marriage to John Charles Arens on May l' 1948 at St. Martins Catholic Church in Woodstock. After John's death in August 2003, Mary spent just over a year in Slay ton, Minnesota with her sister Margaret Stinger. After a stroke on October 5, 2004, Mary entered the Pipestone County Medical Center and subsequently the Ashton Care Center, where she resided until her death on Saturday December 11, 2004 at the age of 96 years, 2 months and 20 days.
Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Angela and her husband John Putnam of Dodge Center, MN; three grandchildren, Andrew, Briana and Rachel Putnam all from Dodge Center, MN; her sisters, Helen and her husband Ed Burkard of Green Bay, WI; Agnes Chapman of Lake Wilson, MN; Margaret Slinger of Slay ton, MN; and Betty and her husband Wayne Staab of Pipestone, MN; her brothers, Joe and his wife Rosie Slinger of Hardwick, MN; Henry and his wife Mary Slinger of Jackson, MN; Bill and his wife Lois Sling- er of Northfield, MN; and Bernard and his wife Judy Slinger of Casa Grande, AZ; one sister-in-Iaw, Josephine Arens of Jasper, MN; five godchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John; her parents; one sister, Martha Pfeiffer; and three brothers and their spouses, Edward Slinger; Walter and his wife Evelyn Slinger, and Louis and his wife Rita Slinger.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, December 14, 2004 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Westbrook. Burial was in St. Martin Catholic cemetery, Woodstock.
