Joel Todd was born on October 15, 1961, in Orange City, one of seven children born to Ervin “Ike” and Eva (Ver Steeg) Huizenga. He grew up in Orange City where he attended the Orange City Christian School. Although he caused his teachers their fair share of headaches, he was allowed to graduate from Unity Christian High School in 1980.

He was united in marriage to Karen Beth Kredit on March 8, 1985, in Karen’s hometown of Sioux Center. The couple made their home in Orange City, where they raised their four children. In earlier years Joel worked at K-Products in Orange City and later at Harkers in LeMars. In the late nineties, he purchased his first semi-tractor, and started Huizenga Transportation. He initially pulled a flat bed trailer for hauling steel, and later started working with Te Slaa Trucking in Hull, often pulling refrigerator and freezer trailers long distance.

When he was not on the road, Joel enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren. He and Karen also liked to ride motorcycle, and together they regularly made trips to ride in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Joel was also an automotive enthusiast, and he could often be found watching The Weather Channel, keeping up to date on conditions in the areas where he traveled.

Survivors include his wife of more than 36 years, Karen, of Orange City; four children, Craig Huizenga, of Sheldon; Brooke, and her husband, Marcus Mai, of Orange City; Nikki Ayers, and her significant other, Kyle Grieme, of Moville; and Riley Huizenga, and his wife, Tiffany, of Orange City; eleven grandchildren, Treyton, Chase, and Cade Huizenga; Brielle, Brantley, and Bristol Mai; Mya, Mayson, and Raya Ayers, and Tripp Grieme; and Westlyn Huizenga; his parents, Ike and Eva Huizenga, of Orange City; two sisters and their husbands, Tami and Todd Morrison, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Sheila and Brian Davelaar, of Ireton; three brothers and their wives, Darren and Dawn Huizenga, Ryan and Sherri Huizenga, and Ross and Dawn Huizenga, all of Orange City; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and an infant brother, Michael Huizenga.

Memorials may be given to the Huizenga Family for future designation.
