Mr. Ben Schiebout, age 96, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, November 16, 2021, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, November 20, at 11:00am, at the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. John Klompien will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 10:00am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be on Friday, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

Benjamin was born on May 14, 1925, in Ireton, the sixth of twelve children born to Herman and Jennie (De Groot) Schiebout, Sr. He was raised on a farm near Ireton and attended the Ireton Christian School through the eighth grade. He then served in the United States Army from 1945 to 1946, when he was honorably discharged.

On January 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Theresa Irene Van Gelder in Orange City. They made their home on a farm south of Orange City until 1975, when Ben decided to no longer farm livestock and they moved into town. He continued to farm the land, eventually turning over the crop farming to his son, until he lost most of his vision in 2014. They were members of the Calvary Christian Reformed Church in Orange City, where he had served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and they participated in the Mr. and Mrs. Club. “Irene” passed away on November 28, 2012, in Orange City, after more than 62 years of marriage. Ben moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in 2015, and then to the Prairie Ridge Care Center in 2020, both in Orange City.

God, farming, church and family were always very important in his life. He loved going to lunch, playing dominos and spending time with his family. He an avid cap collector and proudly displayed his collection, with each cap representing an experience or memory. Although Ben lost his vision, he did not let this keep him from seeking out new passions, which included listening to books and church services, as well as forming new friendships with the residents at Landsmeer.

Ben is survived by his three children, Conrad Schiebout, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, and his children, Angela (David) Whitlock and Ryan (Emily) Schiebout; Milton Schiebout, and his wife, Diane, of Orange City, and their children, Mitchell Schiebout; Logan Schiebout; and Marissa Schiebout; and Regina, and her husband, Mike Seaton, of Omaha Nebraska, and their children, Alexandria (David) Marchetti; Dr. Micaela (Dr. Michael) Bethel; Michael (Rebekah) Clark; and Nathan (Bailey) Seaton; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Adria Ruisch, of Sioux Center and Lena Vander Laan, of Orange City; a brother and his wife, William (Sue) Schiebout, of Loveland, Colorado; a sister-in-law, Ila Schiebout, of Orange City; and Irene’s two sisters, Joyce Hulst, of Orange City, and Kathleen “Kathy” Van Wyhe, of Ireton; and her brother and his wife, John (Thelma) Van Gelder, of Orange City.

He will be joining his parents and wife in heaven, as well as a son and daughter in infancy, Clayton and Rita Schiebout; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Schiebout; a great-granddaughter in infancy, Isabella Marchetti; five brothers, Ferd (Florence) Schiebout, Henry (Ethel) Schiebout, Chris Schiebout, Abe (Hermina) Schiebout, and Herman (Betty) Schiebout; three sisters, Johanna (Peter Sinkey and Gay Krull) Krull, Geraldine (Ted) Van Voorst, and Ann (Arie) Van Bruggen; two brothers-in-law, Gene Ruisch and Clarence Vander Laan; Irene’s three brothers, James (Hendrine) Van Gelder, Dick (Net) Van Gelder, and Wilbur (Betty) Van Gelder; her sister-in-law, Clarena Van Gelder; and her three brothers-in-law, Gordon Van Wyhe, John Te Brink, and Nick Hulst.

Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Christian Reformed Church.
