From the Sioux County Capital, September 21, 1939:

OBITUARIES – MRS. DENA APENHORST

Mrs. Dena Apenhorst, 78, died Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Duvon, after a weeks illness. She was a native of The Netherlands and her home was at Greenleafton, Minn. She had spent the last year here.

Survivors include Mrs. Duven, Ben Apenhorst of Greenleafton and John Apenhorst of Cherry Grove, Minn.

Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. in the Duven home Saturday afternoon, and Sunday morning the body was taken to Greenleafton by the Van Etten Funeral Home. Additional services were held there Monday.

Mrs. J. Apenhorst Was 78 Years Old

Mrs. John Apenhorst passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Duven, after a short illness of nine days. She had reached the age of 78 years, eight months and 21 days.

On Saturday afternoon services were held at the home of Mrs. Duven, in charge of Rev. Nattress and Rev. Brouwer and on Sunday morning the body was taken to her old home at Greenleafton, Minn., where on Monday services were held again. She was buried beside her husband who passed away a year and a half ago.

Those from Orange City who attended the funeral were Mrs. Minnie Duven and children, Edith, Leona and Howard, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Aalberts and Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Duven.

Her death certificate (informant Minnie Duven) has Dena Apenhorst, wife of John Apenhorst, born Dec. 25, 1860 in the Netherlands; parents William Doornink and Berdena Nagel; died at 4:15 p.m. September 15, 1939; cause, cardiac insufficiency and auricular fibrillation; contributory causes, acute enteritis, onset Sept. 8, 1939, and “incarcerated umbical hernia.”

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Berendina Louisa “Dena” Doornink Apenhorst; born 25 Dec 1860 at De Heurne, Aalten Municipality, Gelderland, Netherlands; spouse John Gerrit Apenhorst (1857-1938, married 1883); three children listed: Grace Apenhorst Metzer (1884-1919), John H. Apenhorst (1888-1967), and Ben Apenhorst (1891-1967). There is a photo of her.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index record for Berendina Louisa Doornink; father Willem Doornink, age 41, a tailor; mother Berendina Nagel; born 25 Dec 1860 at De Heurne (Aalten), Gelderland.

The Minnesota Official Marriage System (MOMS) has an entry for John Gerrit Apenhorst and Dinah Louise Doornink, married in Fillmore County 21 March 1883, certificate no. C-290B.

The 1900 U.S. census shows the family farming in Forestville Township, Fillmore County, Minnesota: John Apenhaus (age 42), born Nov. 1857 in Wisconsin, married 17 years; wife Diana (age 39), born Dec. 1860 in Minnesota, mother of four children, all living; children Grace (16, born April 1884), Minnie (14, born April 1886), John (12, born March 1888), and Ben (9, born April 1891), all born in Minnesota.

The 1910 census for Forestville Township has John G. Apenhorst (52), married 27 years, still a farmer; wife Dena L. (44), now shown as born in Holland, immigrated 1882; daughter Grace R. (25); sons John H. (22) and Benjamin (19), both farm laborers; adopted children Clarence J. (8) and Eveline J. (6), both born in Minnesota.

In the 1930 census, John G. (72?) and Dena (69) Apenhorst are still living on a Forestville Township farm, but he is listed as with no occupation; her immigration date is given as 1890; she is naturalized.
