Mary Rita Minten, 91 years old, of Alton, IA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Wedneday, Aug. 18, 2021, at Vintage Park of Louisburg, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2021, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with Father Daniel Greving officiating and Deacon Dan Goebel assisting. Burial will follow in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Alton. Visitation with family present will be 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, there will be a parish rosary and vigil prayer service at 5 p.m. all at the church. Visitation will resume one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church.

Rita was born Dec. 8, 1929 at Wakonda, SD, the daughter of James & Jauletta (Krueger) Buckley. She grew up in the Maurice, IA area and graduated from LeMars Community High School in 1948.

On Sept. 25, 1951 she married Paul Minten at Alton. They lived near Kingsley, where they farmed until 1965 when they moved to a farm near Remsen. In 1974 they moved to a farm near Alton. After Paul’s death on Dec. 17, 1998 Rita continued living on the farm until moving to Vintage Park Assisted Living of Louisburg, KS in 2012.

Rita was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and church guild of Alton and most recently a member of Immaculate Conception Church of Louisburg, KS.

Rita will especially be remembered for her great sense of humor and her love for anything purple. She loved to watch John Wayne movies, read, and play cards. Mostly she just loved spending time with her children and grandchildren during what has affectionately been dubbed Mintenfest. Rita was an avid sewer and a talented writer. She sewed everything from clothing for her family, to wedding dresses, and wrote and produced several variety shows for school fund raisers. She also baked, often making 12 loaves of bread at a time each week while her children were growing up, and there was always at least one loaf devoured before it was barely out of the oven. In fact, it wasn’t unheard of for the neighbors to drop in for a visit on bread baking day with a jar of strawberry jam in hand.

Survivors include her twelve children, Dave (Amanda) Minten of Idabel, OK, Janet (Roger) Hartmann of Overland Park, KS, Dan (Alicia) Minten of Sibley, IA, John (Donna) Minten of Hot Springs, AR, Jolene Meusburger of Springboro, OH, Lori (Robert) Stoll of Alton, IA, Lynn (Kevin) Poen of Lake City, IA, Deb (Dave) Cooper of Louisburg, KS, Lyle (Julie) Minten of Ottawa, KS, Matt Minten of Gretna, NE, Mark (Lanae) Minten of Sergeant Bluff, IA and Mary Minten of Sioux City, IA; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul; five brothers, Leo Buckley, Tim (Lucy) Buckley, Bill (Marie) Buckley, Tom Buckley and Don (Mary Ann) Buckley; two sisters, Annetta (Harry) Bjorholm and Noema (Harvey) Prieksat.

Casket bearers will be Rita’s sons, Dave, Dan, Lyle, Matt, Mark and her grandson Brett Minten.
