Mrs. David Coulter, a resident of this community for 56 years, passed away at her home at 10 o'clock Tuesday night from pneumonia. Mrs. Coulter had been in failing health for some time and when stricken with pneumonia last week it was known that her condition was critical and she grew weaker gradually until death claimed her.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Barnard Funeral Home with Reverend R.F. Chapler, pastor of the Methodist Church, in charge. Interment will be in Grace Hill Cemetery.

Lizzie Swigger was born at Fergeson, Ontario, Canada, November 11, 1852, and passed away in Hawarden February 20, 1940, having attained the age of 87 years, 3 months and 9 days. She grew to young womanhood in Canada and on October 14, 1872, was united in marriage with David Coulter at Owen Sound, Canada. Immediately after their marriage they came to the United States, locating at Ishpeming, Michigan, where they resided until 1876 when they came to Cherokee County, Iowa. In 1884 they came to Sioux County and purchased the farm, two miles southeast of Hawarden, which was still her property when she passed away. In 1906 they retired and purchased a home in town and she has lived in this city continuously for the past 34 years. Her husband preceded her in death January 24, 1922. There were no children in the family.

Following the death of her husband, her nephew, Joe Cross, made his home with her until his death six years ago. She united with the Methodist Church when she resided in Cherokee County. She is survived by four sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Ellen Curtis, Chatsworth, Canada; John and Albert Swigger, Deseboro, Canada; Mrs. Alfred Eicholdt, Square Butter, Montana; Mrs. William Edmunds, Hawarden, and Mrs. A.L. Wallace, Rochester, Minnesota.

Mrs. Coulter was a hard worker throughout her life. "Early to bed and early to rise," was a cardinal virtue with her. Through industry and frugality she and her husband accumulated a competence during his lifetime and she was well able to enjoy a life of leisure in her declining years. But the habits of industry she had learned in her youth could not be cast aside and she was every busy at some task. Until the past year or so she had continued to look after all her household duties without assistance and only when her physical condition made it imperative would she consent to securing outside assistance. Until recent months she was unusually active and virile for a woman of her years and gave close attention to her business affairs. She enjoyed the friendship and respect of her neighbors and those who knew her best and her keen sense of humor was usually apparent in her relations with her friends.
