OBITUARIES – MRS. ARIE ROGGEN

Alida Swarts was born August 22, 1851 in Terschelling, Holland and came to America in 1882.

She was united in marriage to Arie Roggen in 1872. To this union 13 children were born, four passing away in infancy, a son in 1911 and a daughter Mrs. Mattie Guerink in 1899. The seven living children are James of Hull; Gerrit of Sheldon; Rev. John of Maurice and 4 daughters Mrs. Tillie Lutjen of Sheldon, Mrs. Kate Korselman of Sheldon, Mrs. Mary Koole and Miss Ella at Home.

The family came to America 57 years ago last March and lived at Alton, then on a farm near Middleburg, and 30 years ago came to Hull where they since resided. Mr. Roggen died Aug 5, 1934.

Mrs. Roggen suffered a stroke and passed away Sunday morning Dec. 4, 1939. The funeral was held in the First Reformed church at 1:30 Tuesday in charge of Rev. G. H. Douwstra and R. A. Jager. Burial was in Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. A. Roggen, 88, Passed Away Sun.; Buried Tues.

Mrs. A. Roggen, who had been ill for some time, passed away last Sunday morning, December 3rd, at her home here in Hull at the age of 88 years, 3 months and 11 days.

Mrs. Roggen, nee Alida Swarts, was born in Ter Schelling, the Netherlands, on August 22, 1851. She was married to Mr. Arie G. Roggen on November 8, 1872. The family came to America in the spring of 1882. They settled first on a farm northeast of Alton and later bought a farm southwest of Alton, and in 1894 moved to the home farm near Middleburg. They retired in 1907 and moved to Hull. Mr. Roggen died on August 5, 1934.

Mrs. Roggen was a kind and loving mother and a great church worker, and will be greatly missed by relatives and friends alike. She was the mother of thirteen children, four dying in infancy. Her oldest daughter, Mrs. Guerink, died in 1899, and a son, Cornelius died in 1911. The surviving children are: Gerrit of Sheldon; James of Hull; Ella of Hull; Mrs. Henry Koerselman of Hull; Rev. John A. Roggen of Hamilton, Michigan; Mrs. Henry Koele of Hull; and Mrs. L. H. Lutjens of Sheldon. She is also survived by thirty-five grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.

Her death certificate adds her parents, Cornelius Swart and Alida Rothgans; resident of the U.S. 57 years and of Hull 32 years; died December 3, 1939; cause, apoplexy.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Alida Swart Roggen, born 22 Aug 1851 in West-Terschelling, Terschelling Municipality, Friesland, Netherlands; husband Arien Gerrits Roggen (1852-1934, married 1872); nine children listed.

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index record for groom Arien Rogge, age 20, born in Terschelling, parents Gerrit Ariens Rogge and Martje Cornelis Schaap; bride Alida Swart, age 21, parents Cornelis Wigles Swart and Alida Jans Rotgans; married in Terschelling 8 November 1872.

The 1900 U.S. census shows A. and Alida Roggen and family farming in Welcome Township, Sioux County. The parents and their two oldest children, Ella and Cornelius, immigrated from Holland in 1882, and A. [Arie] is naturalized. (Their third child, Katie, is listed as born in Holland in Aug. 1882, but is not given an immigration date.)

Their surname is given as Roggen in all other censuses, as well, and they are listed as Arie G. and Alida Roggen in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.
