Donna Mae (De Leeuw) Vonk was born on December 13, 1934, to William and Margaret (Ten Haken) De Leeuw on the family farm near Middleburg, Iowa. Her family lived in the Middleburg and Hull, Iowa area and she received her education through the 8th grade at Capel Township #9 country school. She graduated from Sioux Center High School.

On December 16, 1952, Donna married her high school sweetheart, Peter Vonk in Middleburg and they made their home in Sioux Center. Following their marriage, Peter was drafted and served in the US Army for two years. During Peter’s time in the service the couple lived in California and in Washington State. Upon their return the couple began farming west of town. Donna enjoyed farming and was a vital part of the operation. The Vonk farm is now listed as a century farm. Donna and Pete retired from farming in 1991 and moved into Sioux Center. Donna worked for nearly 29 years as a CNA at the Sioux Center Hospital and Royale Meadows.

Donna loved to work with people with special needs and was instrumental in starting the Friendship Series Bible course. She was a member of First Reformed Church of Sioux Center and stayed involved in numerous jobs around the church over the years.

In her free time, Donna enjoyed gardening, counted cross-stitch and everything to do with the farm. She was lovingly known as Grandma Cookie because of her chocolate chip cookies and cut-out cookies that she made for most any holiday. Her fudge sauce was a family treat.

Donna is survived by three children, Warren (Sandi) Vonk of Sioux Center, Brenda (Rick) Dolieslager of Sioux Center, Dan (Kim) Vonk of Ireton, IA; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters: Elizabeth Wynja of Melvin, IA, Marilyn (Lorin) Schaefer of Boyden, IA and Carol (Paul) Adkins of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.
