Former Resident Passes On

Mrs. John Dykhuis, a former resident of Rock Valley for a number of years, died in her home near Volga, S.D., last week Wednesday afternoon, July 26, at three o’clock, at the age of fifty-six years and ten months. The Dykhuis family moved away from here about twenty years ago.

Mrs. Dykhuis leaves her husband, [word missing] daughters and three sons, all at home excepting one daughter, who is married and lives near Volga.

Funeral services were held in the Christian Reformed church in Volga Saturday afternoon, July 29. Among those from this vicinity who went to Volga to attend the funeral services were R. Cleveringa, John Van Gelderen, Mrs. Henry Veltman and Mrs. Spoelstra, of Chicago, who is visiting here.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Gertie Vos Dykhouse, born 1882, died July 1939, buried in Trinity Cemetery, Volga, Brookings County, South Dakota. Spouse John Dykhouse (1869-1944). Eight children listed: Martha Dykhouse Houtman (1907-1988), William Dykhouse (1908-1979), Jeanette Dykhouse (1910-1991), Tillie D. Dykhouse Makowski (1913-1970), Charles Dykhouse (1915-1983), John Dykhouse (1917-2007), May Dykhouse Evenson (1919-1996), Rowena Dykhouse Steinberg (1922-2010). There is a photo of her headstone (“Gertie 1882-1939”), and of the family stone (Dykhouse).

The 1910 U.S. census for Garfield Township, Sioux County has Jan Dykhuis (39), born in Holland, immigrated 1894, an alien, a farmer/general farm, married 6 years; wife Grietje (27), born in Holland, immigrated 1903, mother of 4 children, 3 living; children Martha (2), Willem (1) and Jennie (0/12), all born in Iowa; and two Dutch-born hired men.

By the 1930 census, farming in Volga with all children except Martha, they are John and Gertie Dykhouse.

Birth and marriage index records found on Amazon.com for some of her children give her maiden name as Vos or sometimes Fos.
