Rodney Gene DeVries, 70, Red Oak, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2021, at the Lakeside Hospital in Omaha, Neb.

Rod was born Sept. 26, 1950, in Rock Valley, the son of Richard and Evelyn (Van Driel) DeVries. The family moved to Hawarden, Iowa, where Rod attended country school until fourth grade. In April of his freshman year his father died, and the family moved to Ireton. Rod graduated from West Sioux High School in 1968. He attended a tech school in Omaha and graduated with a computer programmer degree.

Rod met Donna Swanson and they were united in marriage in October of 1969 in Red Oak. They moved to the farm at Red Oak in 1973. Rod farmed and raised livestock. He attended church at Faith Community Church, was a longtime member of the Red Oak Elks Lodge where he served as trustee, and served on the Red Oak Community School Board for many years. Rod enjoyed fishing at the pond, driving around in the gator, sitting out on the patio with friends and family with the fire pit burning and drinking a Busch Light, Nebraska football, and following all of the activities of the grandchildren.

Rod was united in marriage to Kim Petty on Jan. 15, 2021, in Omaha, Neb.

Preceding him in death were his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Kim Petty DeVries of Red Oak; sons, David DeVries and wife Tammy; and Ron DeVries and wife Jackie of Red Oak; step-children, Dakota Petty and Sierra Petty of Red Oak; grandchildren, Lainey, Kennedy, Chloe, and Max DeVries, all of Red Oak; sisters, Ruth Westergard and husband Randy of Hawarden, and Debra DeVries of Ireton; aunts, Nella DeVries, Marlene Johnson and husband Ken, and Mary Ann Van Driel; nieces and nephews, Aimee Vander Feen and husband Greg, Sarah De La Cuba and husband Luis, Joshua Westergard and wife Lexie, and Casey Westergard and wife Val; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2021, at the Faith Community Church. Due to limited seating, the service will also be live streamed on Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel's Facebook page. There will be open viewing from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, January 22, 2021, at Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.

Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.Social distancing and wearing of masks are required.
