DEATH OF FORMER RESIDENT
Mrs. Jake Boerma Died at Yankton, S.D., Last Saturday

Mrs. Jake Boerma of Yankton, a former resident of this vicinity, passed away Saturday from cancer. Funeral services were held at a Funeral Home in Yankton Tuesday.

Alice Riepma, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everett Riepma of Hawarden, was born at Orange City in 1902 and so was but 37 years of age at the time of her death. She is survived by her husband and five children, four daughters, Minetta, 9; Gertie, 7; Edna, 5; Alice, 3; and one son, Johnnie, 11. She also leaves to mourn her untimely death her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Everett Riepma, four sisters, Mrs. Gertie Baker of Sioux Falls; Mrs. Minnie Biesbrock, Mrs. Albertha Cooper and Irene Riepma of Hawarden, and five brothers, Jake, Lawrence, Wilson and Teddie of Hawarden, and Eddie of Akron.

The South Dakota death index on Ancestry.com has Alice R. Boerema, died 15 April 1939 in Yankton.

Her FindaGrave.com page has her as Alice Riepma Boerema, born 13 Nov 1901 in Sioux County, died 15 Apr 1939 in Yankton County, S.D., buried in Yankton City Cemetery. Parents Evert Riepma (1872-1941) and Minnie Sliekers Riepma (1880-1959). 10 siblings listed. Husband Jake Boerema (1896-1974).

The Dutch Christian Reformed Church register for Bemis, South Dakota (Ancestry.com) has an entry for Evert Riepma and Willemtje Slikkers and 13 children, including Alice, born Nov. 13, 1901.

Also on Ancestry.com is a South Dakota marriage record for groom Jake Boerema, age 28, resident of Bancroft, Kingsbury County, nationality Hollander; bride Alice Riepma, age 22, resident of Castlewood, Hamlin County, nationality American; married at Castlewood Oct. 16, 1924.

The 1930 U.S. census for Lynn Township, Sioux County, Iowa has Jake Boerma, age 31, married at age 25, born in Holland, immigrated in 1915, naturalized, a farm laborer, renting a home ($15/month); wife Alice, age 28, married at age 22, born in Iowa, parents born in Holland; and children John, age 4-3/12, and Menetta R., age 11/12, both born in South Dakota.

(Her husband’s World War II draft registration card spells his surname Boerema (and he signs it as such); his World War I draft registration card and his WieWasWie.nl birth index record both give his name as Jouke Boerema.)
