He was the son of Pieter Pieters Haarsma 1819-1893 and Grietje Pieters van der Ploeg 1823-1851. His wife as Klaasje Hendriks De Jong 1845-1900. Three children were Pieter Dirks Haarsma born 1877, Doetje Dora Dirks Haarsma 1881-1943 and Grietje Gertie Haarsma 1883-1963
