Thelma, who preferred to be called Jean, was born on May 30, 1930, in Ireton, the daughter of Henry and Lena (Kneubel) Van Bruggen. She spent her childhood in the Ireton area and graduated from the Ireton High School.

She was united in marriage to George Huizenga on August 20, 1948, in Ireton, and the couple made their home in Orange City. In addition to being a wife and mother, Jean worked as a nurses’ aide at the Orange City Hospital and later accepted a position as a Deputy Assessor for Sioux County. In later years, the couple moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, and in 2013, they became residents of the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Jean was a long-time member of the American Reformed Church, where in earlier years, she had been involved in the women’s ministry. Jean and George enjoyed many hours together on the golf course and socializing with their friends at the club house. They also liked to play cards and traveling, especially to California to visit family.

She is survived by two children, LeAnn, and her husband, Orval Madden, of Montecito, California; and Jay Huizenga, and his wife, Jane, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; two granddaughters and their husbands, Jessica and Matthew Smith, of Montecito; and Megan and Matthew Sage, of Sioux Falls; three great-grandchildren, Jacob George Smith, and Emmalyn Jane and Everett Matthew Sage; a brother and his wife, Ted and Eunice Van Bruggen, of Sioux Center; a sister, Arlys Feenstra, of Orange City; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Arlyn Van Bruggen in infancy, and Harold Van Bruggen.

The Huizenga Family requests that memorials be given to the Prairie Ridge Care Center and wishes to thank all of the staff there for the kind, loving, and personal attention George and Jean received during their time at this remarkable facility.
