From the Alton Democrat, March 10, 1939:

Former Sioux Co. Resident Passes

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Van Zyl and Jake Bonnecroy drove to Sioux City Sunday, called there by the critical illness of their father, John W. Bonnecroy, who suffered a stroke in the morning and passed on Sunday night. On Wednesday afternoon Mr. and Mrs. Van Zyl and Mr. and Mrs. Bonnecroy motored to Sioux city to attend the funeral services.

Mr. Bonnecroy was a resident for some years of Orange City where he conducted a successful restaurant business. The following is from the Sioux City Journal:

John W. Bonnecroy, 75, died Sunday night in his home, 427 Allan street, following a sickness of one year.

Mr. Bonnecroy was born November 2, 1863, in Amsterdam, Holland. He came to the United States in 1887 and settled in Sioux county, Ia. He moved to Sioux City in 1900 and for eight years operated the Metropolitan restaurant. Later he was in the grocery business on the west side where he remained until his retirement several years ago. He was a member of the Dutch reformed church.

Surviving are his widow, Anna, three children by a former marriage, Jacob of Orange City, Mrs. Anna Van Zyl of Alton and Lyda Bonnecroy of Orange City, and two grandchildren.

From the Sioux County Capital, March 9, 1939:

J. W. Bonnecroy, 76, died Sunday, March 5, at 11 o’clock p.m. at his home in Sioux City. He had suffered from dropsy the past year and a stroke Sunday morning was fatal. Mr. Bonnecroy was a long time merchant of Orange City. 40 years ago he operated a grocery store where the Chas. Mulder store is now. [Followed by survivors, as above.]

His death certificate adds his father, John B. Bonnecroy; died at 10 p.m. March 5, 1939; cause, cerebral hemorrhage “not traumatic”; contributory causes, chronic myocarditis with decompensation, chronic nephritis with hypertension; buried in Calvary Cemetery.

His FindaGrave.com page has him as John William Bonnecroy; born 2 Nov 1863 in Amsterdam, died 5 Mar 1939 in Sioux City, buried in Calvary Cemetery there; spouse Johanna Margaretha Mouw Bonnecroy (1856-1944, married 1889); children Jake J. Bonnecroy (1891-1983), Anna M. Bonnecroy Van Zyl (1894-1962), and Lyda E. Bonnecroy (1896-1983). There is a photo of his headstone.

The 1900 U.S. census shows the family in Orange City; Johanna M.’s birth date is given as Sept. 1860; John’s occupation is Restaurant and Bakery, they have been married 11 years; both were born in the Netherlands; he immigrated in 1887 and she in 1872; neither is naturalized.
