From the Sioux County Capital, February 2, 1939:

Mrs. H. Spinden, 77, died at Doon on Saturday, January 28 following a short illness.

Mrs. Spinden, nee Henrietta Heemstra, was born at Zeeland, Mich., on July 30, 1861. She came to Sioux county with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. T. Heemstra, when she was eight years old. On October 20, 1879 she was married to Henry Spinden, who died on May 20, 1938. Two children also preceded her in death.

She is survived by the following children: Sarah at Riverside, Calif., Joseph, Norfolk, Nebr., Clara Popma at Cherokee, Laura Davidson at Riverside, Calif., Walter at Winside, Nebr., Martha Howen, Riverside, Calif., Thealin, Lake View, Ia., Harriet Vander Vliet, Hull, Mary Wannigan, Sioux Center, Edwin, Fredersburg, Ia., and Julia Davis, Minneapolis. She is also survived by a brother, A. Heemstra and a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ver Burg, both of Orange City, 45 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Doon on Tuesday. Relatives from here attending the funeral included Messrs. and Mesdames J. Lubbers, H. Lubbers, Bert Lubbers, Ed Wassenaar and A. Heemstra, Al Heemstra, Mrs. John Vande Steeg, Otto Mouw, Gerrit Raak, Mrs. E. Ver Berg and Miss Jennie Ver Burg.

RESEARCH NOTES

A briefer obit in the Sioux County Index (Hull), February 3, says that she died at the home of her son, Thilen Spinden, at Lake View, Iowa. Funeral (and burial) were at Doon.

Her death certificate adds her father, Tjeerd Heemstra, born in the Netherlands; mother’s name unknown to the informant, T. H. Spinden of Lake View; died at Lake View, where she had resided for 4 months 24 days, at 2:15 p.m. January 28, 1939; causes, cardiac decomposition and pulmonary edema, onset Jan. 10, 1939, and chronic myocarditis; contributory causes, generalized arterioscleriosis and chronic nephritis.

Her FindaGrave.com page shows her buried in Hillside Cemetery, Doon, Lyon County; parents Tjeerd Fokkes Heemstra (1824-1901) and Syke Jans Hoekstra Heemstra (1826-1904); spouse Henry H. Spinden (1852-1938); nine siblings and four of her children are listed. There is a photo of her headstone.
