DEHAAN, FONKERT, VAN’THOF, NIEBOER

From the Sioux County Capital, February 2, 1939:

John De Haan died at the De Bey hospital on Thursday, January 26, following an illness of diabetes and complications.

He was born at Staatskanaal, Gronigen, The Netherlands on May 23, 1863. He came to America in 1888 and located in the Newkirk vicinity, where he was married to Mrs. Fonkert, nee Aaltje Van’t Hof in 1892. In 1924 they retired from the farm and moved to Orange City. Mrs. De Haan died in 1931 and the past four years Mr. De Haan has resided at the Pioneer Home. He is survived by two sons, Henry of Hospers and Lou of Newkirk, two step-sons Gerrit Fonkert of Ashton and Pete Fonkert of Sheldon. Other survivors are 17 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Monday at 1 o’clock at the Pioneer Home and 1:30 at the First Reformed church with the Rev. Mr. H. Colenbrander officiating.

His death certificate adds his father, Henry De Haan; gives his length of residence in the U.S. as 55 years; died at 7:50 p.m. January 26, 1939; causes, (1) uremia, onset Jan. 12, 1939, (2) bronchiastasis, (3) chronic nephritis, onset 1933; contributory cause, diabetes mellitus.

The 1900 U.S. census has John DeHaan (37), born May 1863 in the Netherlands, immigrated 1888, naturalized, married 6 years, a farmer; wife Ellen (41), born Dec. 1858 in the Netherlands, mother of 9 children, 7 living, immigrated in 1869; sons Peter (14), Gerrit (11), Arie (9), Henry (4), and Louis (2), all born in Iowa; and boarder/farm laborer Wouter Fonkert (52), born in the Netherlands, immigrated 1874, naturalized.
