From the Rock Valley Bee of Oct 28, 2020

Bert Groeneweg, 78 of Sioux Falls, SD, was received into the loving arms of our Savior on October 15, 2020 . Visitation was held on Sunday October 18, 2020, at George Boom Funeral home in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services were held on Monday, October 19, 2020 at the Community Reformed Church on Sioux Falls. Memorials may be directed to the family for future designation to The Banquet or Feeding South Dakota.

Bastiaan ‘Bert’ Groeneweg, son of Leonard and Catherine De Kam Groeneweg was born on December 2, 1941, near Rock Valley Iowa. He graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1959. He attended Nettleton Business College and worked as an investment broker until retirement. He was united in marriage to Marcia De Boer on October 3, 1969 in Orange City, IA. They enjoyed 51 years of adventures, including trips to Hawaii, a Caribbean Cruise and several trips to Mexico.

Bert and Marcia have been members of Community Reformed Church in Sioux Falls since 1969. Bert loved to tinker on all things motorized. It didn’t matter if it was a lawn mower, golf cart, or a boat, he enjoyed figuring out the inner workings and giving new life to anything motorized. He was the best golf cart driving instructor, and all the grandkids were awarded a handmade ‘Driver’s license” when they passed his test. Many summers were spent at Okoboji, and the love of the ‘lake life’ was passes down to this children and grandchildren. Nobody drove a boat better for tubing and wake boarding. He was still water skiing at the age of 75! When he wasn’t tinkering on a motor, he was out in the yard keeping things looking sharp.

Bert and Marcia started wintering Peoria, Arizona, in 2011. When they started wintering in Arizona, it didn’t take him long to master gardening in the desert. Whether in Arizona or Sioux Falls, he treasured morning coffee with his friends.

Bert was the moral compass who put his family on the right path. He was very humble and always appreciated the blessings in his life. He always made time for his kids and grandkids over the years and loved attending their events.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marcia, of Sioux Falls, SD; children, Rhonda (Clay) Boyum and Mark (krista) Groeneweg all of Sioux Falls; siblings, Nella (dick) Bleyenberg, Lydia (Ken) Vander Stouwe, and John (barb) Groeneweg; and grandchildren, Savannah Boyum, Hunter Boyum, Rylee Groeneweg and Trevor Groeneweg.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Catherine.
