Henry Thorman Dies at Granville

Henry Thorman, 56 years old, died at his farm home near Granville Friday evening, July 1st, at 3:30 o’clock, after a lingering illness.

He was born May 8, 1882 at Granville. Mr. Thorman was a lifelong member of the Catholic church. He was a man of deep religious conviction which was reflected in his daily associations among his friends and in his family circle. In his passing the bereaved family loses a loving husband and father, and the community one of its most loyal and creditable citizens.

Henry Thorman was married to Miss Lena Hansen of Chicago in 1908. To this union was born three daughters and two sons. Surviving are the widow and the following children: Leonard of Ashton, Harry at home, (Marie) Mrs. Sam Madorra of Chicago, (Mildred) Mrs. Mike Garber of Chicago, and Lucille at home; also by his aged mother, Mrs. Catherine Thorman, by three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Miller, Mrs. Nic Schwebach and Mrs. Mathilda Lammers and three brothers, Joseph of Wilmont, Minn., Chris and John of Granville. One brother and one sister preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held Monday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Joseph’s Catholic church with Rev. J. A. Gerleman officiating. The body was taken to Chicago for burial on Tuesday. Pallbearers were: Theodore Ney, John Schwebach, Henry De Vries, Ted Johnson, Nick Ahlers and Wm. Schemmel.

Out of town relatives and friends attending the funeral services were: Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Thorman and son Emmett and Mr. and Mrs. Henry De Vries and family of Ashton; Mr. and Mrs. Nick Ahlers, Sr. of Gilbertsville; Mr. and Mrs. Milburn Johnson and Mrs. Kate Miller of Sioux City; Mr. and Mrs. Carl Versluis of Reading, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thorman and children of Wilmont, Minn.; Mrs. Max Thorman of Sheldon; Mrs. George Thorman of Ashton; Miss Evelyn Lammers of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Everhart and daughter of Ellsworth, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. John Feller of Le Mars.

His death certificate gives his name as Henry D. Thorman, and adds his parents, Max Thorman and Katherine Fetz, both born in Germany; residence, Baker Township, O’Brien County, RR #2 Granville; last worked at his occupation of farmer in May 1937; died at 8:30 p.m. July 1, 1938; cause, carcinoma of stomach, onset Nov. 1936; contributory cause, metastasis of liver, onset Nov. 1937; a resection of stomach was performed in Nov. 1937.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his full name as Henry Dolly Thorman; buried in Saint Joseph Cemetery, River Grove, Cook County, Illinois; parents Maximillian Thorman (1847-1910) and Katherine Fetz Thorman (1850-1939); eight siblings listed; spouse Magdalena Hansen Thorman (1884-1966, married 1909); children Leonard Max Thorman (1910-1992), Marie Catherine Thorman Modaro (1912-1967), Mildred Marie Thorman Garber Schenck (1914-1989), Harry James Thorman (1915-1996), and Lucille Barbara Thorman Iverson (1918-2013). There is a portrait photo of him.

The Cook County, Illinois Marriages Index on Ancestry.com shows Henry D. Thorman, age 26 and Lena Hansen, age 24, marrying at Chicago on 20 January 1909.

His World War I draft registration card adds his physical description: tall, stout, brown eyes, black hair.
