From the Alton Democrat, June 17, 1938, Granville news:

Mrs. Catherine Diederich passed away at her home Thursday, June 9, at 1 o’clock, at the age of 86 years, 5 months, 15 days.

Catherine Friedeman was born in Waynesberg, Ohio, December 25, 1851. She was married to Jacob Diederich on April 14, 1874 at Luxemburg, Iowa. They lived at Elkader for a year, then moved to Granville where they made their home since. Mrs. Diederich was a pioneer of this community. Her husband preceded her in death March 15, 1915. She was a member of the Christian Mother Society for many years. An example of her christian living is reflected in that of her lovely family and the kind words said of her which echo from the lips of her many friends.

To this union were born six daughters and two sons. One daughter preceded her in death. The surviving children are: Anna, Mrs. Laurence Spieler; Elizabeth, Mrs. Frank Goergen; Eva, Mrs. Peter Jonas of Carnes; Frank, Paul, Catherine at Granville; Margaret of Dyersville.

Funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic church Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock, at which solemn requiem high mass was read by Rev. Nic. Gaul of Portsmouth, a nephew of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Arnold Ahlers of Marcus and Rev. Zeno Reisinz who acted as deacon and sub-deacon, respectively. Interment took place in St. Joseph’s cemetery with Rev. Nic. Gaul officiating. Pallbearers were her grandsons: Jake, Frank, Laurence Spieler, Martin, Theodore Goergen, and Alvis Jonas.

Krieps of Lismore, Mrs. George Friedeman, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Friedman, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Gergen and daughter Bertha of Alton, Mildred and Gertrude Jonas of Sioux City, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Diederich, Mr. and Mrs. P. Diederich of Milford, Margaret Diederich and Jake Friedman of Dyersville, Martin Spieler of Marcus, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Schneider and daughter Loretta of Alton, Theodore Fath of Alton, Mrs. Al. Schemmel of State Center, Marie and Anna Spieler of Denver, Mrs. Lena Bowers of Dubuque, Mr. and Mrs. Nic. Blatt and son Willy of Le Mars, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard [illegible] of Fulda, Minn., and Mr. and Mrs. Foert of Struble.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Diederich, Catherine, b. 1851, d. 1938, St. Josephs Cem, Granville IA.

Her FindaGrave.com page adds her parents, Joseph Friedman (1814-1883) and Katherine Wentzel Friedman. It lists her eight children and nine siblings and half siblings.

Her death certificate gives her parents as Joseph Friedman, born in Baden, Germany, and Catherine Wesley, born in Pennsylvania; cause of death, cerebral thrombosis; contributory causes hypertension, duration 5 years, and auricular fibrillation, duration 3 years.

The 1925 Iowa state census gives her mother’s name as Catherine Wendel.
