Mariann Haak, age 83, of Sioux Center, IA passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2020 at her home in Sioux Center, IA.

A funeral service will take place at 10:30 AM Monday December 21, 2020 at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center with Rev. John Lee officiating. Private family burial will follow at the Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center. The funeral service can be livestreamed at:

Visitation will be Sunday, December 20th at Memorial Funeral Home from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM with family present.

Mariann Ruth Hoekman was born November 11, 1937 to Cornelius and Johanna (Wynia) Hoekman in a little gray stucco farmhouse near Martin, SD. Brothers Alvin, Marvin, and Benjamin were also born at Martin. When Mariann was 4 ½ years old, the family moved to a farm near Colton SD where her two sisters, Carol and Edith were born. She attended country school. The next year they purchased and moved to a nearby farm and she attended the Colton School. The family was active in the Colton Christian Reformed Church. After high school graduation she went one year to Augustana College in Sioux Falls as a music major. The next year she transferred to Calvin College in Grand Rapids MI. She lived with the Ben and Rena Veldkamp family who she kept in contact with over the years. During this time, she also worked at Baker Book House. In May of 1957 she met and started dating Henry Haak of Hills, MN. When they finished Calvin in 1959, she and Henry taught grade school at Edgerton, MN. They were engaged in November and married June 1, 1960. That summer Henry attended the University of MN and Mariann did office work for a diamond drilling company. That fall they moved to Church Hill, MT where they taught at Manhattan Christian and Dawn and Dora were born. They moved to Sioux Center in 1966 where Henry taught, and Janice and Stanley were born. They built a new house and moved in in early 1969. Mariann babysat in her home for 13 years and began working for Electrolux in July 1984, enjoying that until recently.

She is survived by her daughters, Dawn (Phil) Bonnema of Harrisburg, SD, Dora (Eric) van der Giessen of Seattle, WA, Janice (Kevin) Driesen of Hull, IA; son, Stan (Brenda) Haak of Sioux Center, IA; 12 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren; sister, Edith Hemmeke; sisters-in-law, Juna Hoekman, Joan Hoekman, Thelma Hoekman; brothers and sisters in-law, Albert (Fran) Haak, Henrietta (Rich) Haan, Alida Ver Burg; and other extended family members.

Mariann was preceded in death by her parents; husband Henry; sister, Carol La Perriere; brothers Alvin Hoekman, Marvin Hoekman, and Ben Hoekman, brothers and sisters-in-law Jean La Perriere, Al (Marie) Koedam, Rev. Alvin Ver Burg, John Vander Kooi and Gerald (Henrietta) Haak.
