Rock Valley, IA: Bertha Van De Vendel, 92, of Brandon, South Dakota, formerly of Rock Valley, Iowa, died Thursday, December 3, 2020 at Bethany Meadows in Brandon. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 8, at 10:30 AM at the Netherlands Reformed Congregation with Rev. J.J. Witvoet officiating. The service can be audio-streamed at https://edge.mixlr.com/channel/rwkcn. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery of Rock Valley. Public visitation, with no family present, will be held Monday, December 7, from 3:00-7:00 PM at Porter Funeral Home of Rock Valley.

Bertha (Ymker) Van De Vendel, daughter of Lambert and Hattie (Bosch) Ymker, was born October 10, 1928 at Stickney, South Dakota. The Ymker family later moved to Fairview, South Dakota. Bertha was united in marriage with Cornelius “Cornie” Van De Vendel on May 18, 1955 at Rock Valley, Iowa. Together they farmed near Canton, South Dakota where they raised their four children. After retirement in 1987, the couple moved to Rock Valley. Cornie died November 15, 2010. Bertha continued living in Rock Valley until 2017 when she moved to Bethany Meadows in Brandon, South Dakota.

Bertha enjoyed quilting, antiques, and restoring furniture. She was a very hard worker throughout her whole life. Bertha was a member of the Netherlands Reformed Congregation of Rock Valley.

Bertha is survived by three children, Larry (Brandi) Van De Vendel of Brookings, South Dakota, Howard (Edna) Van De Vendel of Canton, South Dakota, and Linda (Lloyd) Arends of Baltic, South Dakota; son-in-law, Lyle (Marie) Wynia of Canton, South Dakota; eighteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Lucy Ymker of Rock Valley, Iowa and Bernice Ymker of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lambert and Hattie Ymker; husband, Cornie Van De Vendel; daughter, Sharon Wynia; sister, Minnie Wallenburg; three brothers, John, Elmer, and Fred Ymker; and an infant brother, Fred Ymker.
