DeVolksvriend of Jan 8, 1903 In Dutch
Recently Mr. Jacob Boelens, aged 77, died in neighboring Hospers. Our dear correspondent there has notified this death in his letter, see De Volksvriend of 18 December. A Friend shares in weekly magazine Onze Standaard about the deceased also says this:
Mr. Boelens was born on 31 Jan 1825, in Hoorn, Groningen, Netherlands, and came to America in 1880. First he settled in Le Mars, IA, but six months later he bought a farm at Hospers, which he then already occupied.
In Nov 1852 he married Margareta Beerens Visser and then he became a Catholic. His wife preceded him in eternity in 1894.
Mr. Boelens was an honest and sincere man and Christian; Everyone who knew him loved him. He will be greatly missed, especially on Christmas and White Tuesday. On those days it had been the custom for years, although a mile or so away, to go to church on foot, and on the former day sing hymns in praise of Jesus to oneself all along the way, and on White Thursday in the same way. to sing in honor of the Blessed Sacrament. He had a noble heart; a good old man has gone for his wages. Rest in peace.
