Hawarden Independent of Nov 12, 1885
Killed by the cars. Canton Advocate.
A person by the name of N. Gobell came in from Rock Valley Tuesday night and being bound of Elk Point remained over night at the junction depot. About six o’clock Wednesday morning a freight came along bound west and the traveler left the depot. About five minutes later he was found with his neck stretched out on the rail, his body on the outside and head on the inside of the track.
coroner’s jury was summoned who after hearing the evidence brought in a verdict of accidental death. Gobell lived on a farm near Rock Valley and had a wife and seven children. His brother in law who was here yesterday says the deceased had suffered several periods of temporary aberration lately, and when not in the condition has been very despondent. He visited his father in Elk Point only a week ago and it is the general opinion that he was out of his mind in making this second trip, and in a moment of hypochondria or despondency he deliberately laid down and let the fright train end his live.
