Birth record in the Netherlands lists Teunis Van Zalen born 22 Jan 1845 at Havelte, Drenthe Neth. His parents were Jan Van Zalen 34, and Fennegje Ebels 29.

Marriage record list Teunis Van Zalen a bakker, born Havelte Dr., age 25 married Harmpke Wager born Kuinre age 23, His parents were Gerrit Jan Van Zalen and mother Femmigje Ebels, her parents were Gerhardus Wagter and Antje Kuiper. Married 13 July 1870 Kuinre, Zwolle, OV.

Wilson of Emmetsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Geo Quirk of Storm Lake and Miss Grad Van Zalen.
Tennis van Zalen one of the quietest in the land is no more. Long time suffered from the decay of forces; In addition came the influenza flu, and On Sunday morning at 8 40 he blew the last breath at the age of 87 years. Born in Kolderveen, Drente, he in 1903 he moved with his wife to Sac County, and came to Orange City in 1914. The deceased was married twice. His first wife, Harmke Wächter, died in OcL, 1878 after a mere 7 years huwelljk him bequeathing 3 children, who are now also deceased, In 1879 he rejoined the married state, now with Mrs. Hiltje Johanna van Donselaar, who gave him 5 children, of which four are still alive, and Hermanus, (Mrs. H. Steenbjock in Sibley); - Mina (Mrs. Robert Wilson in Emmettaburg), Iowa, (Mrs. George Quirk in Storm Lake), and Grada, still with her mother in the house. The deceased was a baker by trade and in the first years of his being here he occasionally helped his peers, but later he put more on vegetables gardening which was a good thing. All the children with their other spousesmcame over to pay their last respects to the deceased father There are still 2 sisters, at Arnhem, Ned.,-30 grand children, and I5 great grandchildren. The funeral was Tuesday at half past two in the death home and at 2 hour ln the first Chr. Ref church place.
